So here we are again, wedged

In between our problems and the refrigerator.

Like that crowded bowl of forgotten fruit:

Ever-ripening, bruised, quietly edging towards disposal. Blurry-eyes

Nervously read the family recipe, knowing I don’t have the ingredients.

Can you hear Mama calling on the phone?

Eventually, I’ll pick up. I’ll break the quiet with a lie and say I’m making banana bread.

Melancholy, relatable, very visual, could see you sitting on the floor summoning up the lie 🙂🍌

I really did think you were making banana bread at first, so it's a very believable lie 😬

Wow- this managed to be humorous, melancholy, profound and relatable across all of those dimensions - masterful work, J.! It seems to me a lot of the best poetry uses simple and very specific scenes to reflect on deep undercurrents of thought and emotion; this does that incredibly well. Thanks for sharing this masterpiece, and congrats on a well-deserved Top Story! :)

What an amazing acrostic. Hiding behind banana bread in order to assure your mom you're just fine. No....tell her you need the comfort that only she can give.
