September days are bittersweet
An Octet poem for 'Song of Seven' September challenge

September days are bittersweet
A troubling month for me
A month when the seasons change
Sunshine is what we begin to see.
The dreary days of winter gone
Cold winds no longer come off the sea
A time when flowers start to bloom
And vibrant colours we can see.

September has been bittersweet
Five years have now passed
Since that fateful day
When little Tia slipped away.
She took a piece of my heart with her
When she sent to God
And each September I shed a tear
A send her a special prayer.

That same month, that very same year
A memory that is so clear
My final day of working life
Semi-retirement was here.
So many things that I had planned
But few have ever come about
Life and living get in the way
And there is always something to sort out.

Yes, September has been bittersweet,
Four years later almost to the day,
The news no one wants to hear
You have a rare form of cancer, man.
But there is no need to fear,
Weβll just keep our eye on it
Test you four times a year
And hope it will disappear.

But things like that donβt go away
They linger in your mind
Iβve been there once before
And sort of ended up fine.
Each time there's tests I hope and pray
That my markers do not climb
So every time September comes
I βm glad for yet another year.

A new bittersweet September
I have made a new plan for myself
Itβs time that I got out and about
And see what else is in store for me.
I set a task to write a book,
And take up more photography
Iβll review how it went in one yearβs time
At this bittersweet time for me.
