Perhaps

As I lay me down to sleep

As I lay me down to sleep

On this day, my heart does weep.

When everything seems out of place

In a world that spins without God’s grace.

When leaders think that they are kings,

And electors simply their playthings

To manipulate as they so please,

Like mindless drones on bended knees.

Violence is as violence was,

And hatred thrives, just because

They’re told they’re supposed to feel this way,

Original thoughts, left to decay.

Another day, another year,

Another mother’s cries I hear.

Another innocent laid to rest,

A society that’s a fucking mess.

I watch the snow fall to the ground,

And try to value the beauty abound.

But instead, I find it takes a toll

As I count the flakes as missing souls.

Before too long a blizzard flies,

And icicles form below my eyes;

As tears, they fall like frozen rain,

I find my heart numbed to the pain.

This world has surely turned my soul,

From welcome warmth to bitter cold.

Or perhaps, I’m having a dreadful day.

Perhaps, tomorrow I’ll be okay.

Perhaps, in the morning, I’ll smile anew.

Perhaps, we’ll get some good news too!

Perhaps, but I doubt it.

Hope springs eternal, someone wrote. It's a good job it does, otherwise we are all done for. I feel ya. Well done.

Heavy, heavy poem but incredibly beautiful (and important). Wonderful!

Very impressive flipping of the snow imagery and the repetition of "perhaps" definitely felt like hammering the nails of a coffin. But I do hope you get some good news.

I love the optimistic nihilism of this Cathy! Excellently written as always!

Ah, but we are meat suit wearing skeletons made of stardust hurtling around a star and observing the universe and our place within it. Even the lowliest life and grubbiest thought is still a breathtaking prism seen through that lens.

Taking stock of the world and its many woes is numbing, unspeakably painful or an opportunity for hope of positive change. This is striking meditation on choice and individual perspective in difficult times. Great work, Cathy!

Thank you for this poignant and heartfelt piece; I think all of us resonate with it deeply, looking around at the world today. Painfully beautiful reflections like this one make it a little better.

That we still care enough to consider the weight of the events that befall our fellows is the very essence of hope itself, for might the idiot in power also eventually learn to care? A well-wrought and timely meditation, Cathy.

  • This broke my heart so much. The world has been becoming worse over the years in every way. Nothing at all is getting better 🥺
