Moonstruck
Letter to the Moon
My dearest Moon,
My constant companion
Wandering with me down the decades
Lending silent support in spades
Beaming approval from high in the sky.
*
Nary a cross word ever passed between us
You’re the ultimate friend, never causing a fuss!
Though you habitually vanish at the most inconvenient time
I’ve never remotely consider that to be a crime
When your night-light kindly shines on bedtime lullabies.
*
Such sparkle you added to midnight swims
Dips taken in oceans and lakes, on wonderful whims
Gentle breezes kissed cheeks and ruffled hair
As I strolled down moonlit country roads without a care
Together with friends, I capered, chattered and chuckled in your company.
*
But, my dearest Moon… on second thoughts
Are you my friend, when to you… I’m but naught?
In comparison to your luminous face
I pale into insignificance, without a whimper or trace
My love for you remains true, despite the sad realisation it’s unrequited.
*
For although we’ve travelled the world together
You’re merely a lustrous, nocturnal ‘shadow’, to which I’m tethered
No sorrow nor blame at your feet I lay
Ever fond of your impervious presence I’ll stay
I will always admire your reign on high in the velvet sky.

This is such a tender and beautifully nostalgic piece. I love how you shift from warmth and admiration to that gentle moment of doubt and self-awareness at the end.
"You’re merely a lustrous, nocturnal ‘shadow’, to which I’m tethered" Whoaaaa, that line was mindblowing! Loved your poem!
What a great image you chose to match your wonderful words, Angie. I can see the moon blushing.
I like this rumination on friendship, real and imagined and that you touch on how it “ghosts” us from time to time. Great job!
How is unrequited when its your constant companion. Thats quite a relationship with the moon .
