Little Things

hugs, snacks, and freckled faces

A friend just went through a terrible tragedy. Their daughter experienced a freak accident and at the tender age of six she passed away. My heart has been heavy for them for several days and my mind consumed with praying for them. Thankfully, even despite this pain, they have a faith to hold on to, something their daughter had as well. This poem is inspired by a conversation I had with my youngest child on the morning I heard the news.

"Come here," I beg tearfully as he walks by, my arms stretching out.

"Hey, can I have a snack?" it's all he can think about.

"Do you know I love you?" I blink away tears and side step the request.

"Yes, but..." I gaze at his pale blue eyes which he's been blessed.

"And do you know you're precious to me?" I brush back his soft brown hair.

"Yes but..." he's distracted, it's like he doesn't care.

"And do you know God loves you," I need to hear it again.

"Yes but, mommy..." I hug him tightly and then,

"Do you believe in Jesus," it's all I wanted to ask.

" Yes, but mommy..." he just wants to go about his task.

"But do you really, or do you just think it's what I want to hear?"

"Yes, but mommy..." it's brief but dissuades my fear.

" And do you know...do you know how important you are to me?"

"Yes, but mommy..." impatient now, I wonder, what could it be?

"What is it Milo?" I finally ask.

"But mommy... can I have a snack?"

Life is so unpredictable, bad people thrive and angels soar on wings. Prayers to you and friend, kids will be kids. Let them retain the innocence, soon enough...they will know.

  • Nice to read that.

Beautiful! I hear the urgency in you for him to understand... and the innocence and beauty of a child living in the moment. Well written - and, of course, deepest sorrow that a tragedy occurred. Sometimes all we can do when we can't do anything to make it right, is to write and talk. Thank you
