Independence Fireworks

Celebrating the Fourth of July

Flamboyant colors bursting in the sky

Instantly burning afterimages behind closed eyes

Rolling thunder in the smoky air

Everyone’s eyes are on the night sky

Whoots from all in the celebrating crowd

Odors of sulfur and smoke permeate the air

Revelers observing a special holiday

Kids running here and there, holding sparklers up high

Stars and stripes waving in the breeze

🎇

Ice cream treats to help cool down

Night out for community fun

🎆

To watch a pyrotechnics show at night

Happily sitting on lawn chairs with a group of friends

Each burst of light paints the faces around in colors

🎇

New friends to be made in the growing crowd

Ice melting in the coolers

Giggling children playing games together

Hot dogs are cooking on grills

The adults are drinking beer and sodas

🎆

Scary for the pets in our lives

Keep them safe inside at home

Yes, it’s important to keep feeling secure

I especially loved how you remembered the pets’ perspective. Now I’m craving ice cream and a front-row seat to the show! 😉

  • Wonderful acrostic

My dog used to run from room to room to find peace from all the noise of the fireworks. Hugging tightly seemed to comfort him.

  • Delightful acrostic… yes, the last lines are sadly true of many dogs.🥺

Wonderful poem, MC! Such a great use of the acrostic form! Love the bit about pets at the end of it all! Very thankful our dog is completely unphased by thunder and fireworks!

Not long to go now! I hope you have fun, MC! 💛 This poem feels like it came from all the enjoyment you've had on Fourth of July. It's so beautiful and it exudes fun! And I'm so glad you mentioned the pets at the end. Fireworks can be terrifying for some of them.

Felt like I was out at a picnic, then back in my house with the cowering dog railing at my neighbors. Great job!

  • Aw super cute x

  • That's such a beautiful Acrostic! Yayyyy, let's celebrate hehehehe

  • This is beautiful and in anticipation of fourth of July, the timing of this piece is perfect.

The sulfur small got me. Hard for those with respiratory issues. Our migratory swallows with nests under roofs suffer too. California is fire-prone. Not necessary, I say. Haw about planting trees etc., I ask.

Loved this cool acrostic, Sharon! Although with every year I'm getting more and more weary of fireworks. Not even looking forward to them anymore.

Your poems are always so wonderful. You have such talent for setting a scene and evoking a feeling with just a few words. This one got me excited for next Friday night. (I'm so glad the fourth is on a Friday this year!)

The was lovely - as a Brit living in the US I feel like I shouldn’t love the 4th of July but I do! Was in DC last year the fireworks were amazing!
