Follow the Leader
A Poem on Being a Thoughtful Follower
This is for Mikeydred's Truly July challenge, and there are still a few more days to participate! Do read more about it here!
We celebrate the quintessential leader—not one of our political go-tos, but the Pied Piper of the German town of Hamelin. As everyone well knows, he combated Hamelin's rat problem in 1284 by leading them to the Weser River, where they drowned.
Don't mistake me, I laud the Piper for dealing with the infestation. I dislike rats as much as the next person. But the Pied Piper does teach the important lesson of being a thoughtful follower-we don't want to go down the wrong path as they did.
Enjoy this simple narrative poem.
Artist with a heady hat,
Plays the flute to round up rats,
He with tremulous music leads,
With sweet notes the rats he feeds,
They hear his tune without their ears,
Their ratty heads fogged, unclear,
To his dulcet tune they sway
The music leads down path astray.
