Conflagration

A poem for untended fires of the heart

I still remember the night

When we became one

The furtive glance of happenstance

Shared between two wandering souls

Who knew not yet their roads would cross

Until that breath of silence sweet

Until that touch, held cheek-to-cheek,

Until that secret shrouded under midnight cloak

With eyes and hands that could not part

And a kiss sealed evermore with an oath

Whispered in silver moonlight

Until the night when the fires died

And you drew from me like a phantom tide

Your warm embrace traded for biting wind

My burning heart left to beat in dying embers

Listening for its long fled counterpart

Only to hear in reply a mournful echo

To fan the gasping flames

I still remember the night

When we became one

Yet now I lie on the forking road

Airing my cindered song

Hoping

Waiting

To see if the coals will die

Oh itโ€™s hard to choose a favourite line on this one! Iโ€™m really torn between โ€œ And you drew from me like a phantom tideโ€ and โ€œCindered songโ€ This was fantastic Ian!

Oh my god yes, this is so good! ( And relateable lol ) Love the imagery of fire and coals throughout; it really made the whole piece feel cohesive and it flowed naturally as I read it! So nice to read more of your poetry, friend. c:
