Down in the Freezer!
Hot
Humid day
Emerald green sky…
Maybe more hail on the way?
What better time for a deep dive…
Down, down, down… into the chilly abyss
Dad’s crammed chest freezer… with ice encrusted
Will I topple in, vanish… never to be seen again… alive?
A mental compass activated; Search and Rescue Mission, or Destroy?
Vanilla yoghurt abandoned eons ago… Dad detests yogurt! He’s disgusted!
Retrieve… then definitely dump; ditch, discard… our only ploy.
Takeaway container… icy spiderwebs embellish
Pink, yellow, green, red… mould?!
Eek! I recoil…it sure looks hellish!
Your mother made that!
Dad chirps up with a grin.
Mum’s gone, she died
Two years it’s been.
It’s her Trifle!
We decide.
Yum?!

Ham!
Half a leg
Frozen solid!
We only need a bit.
The circular saw… Dad’ll fix it!
Burning metallic smell…
“This tastes horrid!”
That didn’t
Go so…
Well!

“Mum!
This is off!”
“Don’t be silly…
It’s just tomato sauce…”
Sip and try… we almost cry!
“Grandie’s put vinegar in!”
“Waste not, want not…”

Dry bread
Without a doubt, toss it out
Into the back yard… birds will be fed.
Curry, mince or stew… any old brew
Oh, put it in a container… save it!
For Cocoa the dog, it’ll do.
Dad sure was frugal!
He made life

In breaking news, rehabilitated Republican Senator Johnnie Johnson (Pronouns: HE, HIM, HIS) called a press conference from the Men’s room of the New Orleans Louis Armstrong International Airport, Concourse B, across from the Ignatius Reilly’s Lucky Dog stand. The Senator had just returned from a sexual reorientation rehabilitation program in Memphis, TN after being publically disgraced at a Buckee’s Truckstop restroom soliciting sex from an undercover cop three months ago. He is a founding member of the Reformed Christians for Christ, a conservative, pro-family and ex-gay advocacy group. In the spirit of being reborn, Senator Johnson invited reporters to marvel at his plans for a major remodeling of airport bathrooms.

I love the playfulness of the visual structure of your poem and the poetic contents (of the fridge as it were). The context of memory and frugality brings elements of an elegy to the poem but without sacrificing its sense of playful celebration. This is really out of the box poetry. I love it!

The mysteries of the deep freeze. My mum has a chest freezer. It has frozen peas that have been captured by the ice as they've escaped from the bag and the strangest containers of food thst you dread what they may contain. This was fun!
