From New York to London
I like to think of my life in two eras: pre-Rocky and post-Rocky. The pre-Rocky era was wild and carefree. As an early-twenty-something living in New York (far away from the judgment and disapproving looks I had become so accustomed to from my family and friends in London), I did what I wanted when I wanted. To some, this freedom might sound wonderful. What is there to complain about, right? Not having any rules or responsibilities. Well, whilst it certainly did have its perks, my life before Rocky was also empty. All those late nights in bars scattered over New York yearning for comfort, whether it be in the form of a shot glass or a man – it took a toll on me. Soon came anxiety, followed by an unhealthy dose of depression and what I can only describe as a deep hollow feeling.

Super Bowl LV
To lead into this story, it is important that I give a little background of myself. I have PTSD from domestic abuse and my little dog Onyx has been the biggest comfort when my it starts to flare up. So, I tend to take him everywhere. He’s gone on so many vacations with me. We have gone to Virginia, North Carolina, Dallas, Fort Lauderdale, and a few other places, but I think the destination that stands out the most is Tampa for the 2021 Super Bowl LV.

Felix Gets a Job
Once upon a time two friends happened upon a vacant house with a perfect dog. Life has never been the same. HOUSE WANTED. 2 beds, not necessarily in different bedrooms. A full tub, not just a shower. Fireplace, with gas logs. Coffee maker. Wifi. Screened-in porch. Sidewalk neighborhood. Dog, inside, trained, must cuddle.

An Eventful Hike
The sun had not yet risen when Sidney, my German Shepherd, and I loaded up to go for a hike. I knew it would be a long day. My goal was to reach the trail head by no later than 6:30 am. The hike itself would be a rough one. The trail to Pine Creek Lake is labeled at the trail had as 4.5 miles with nearly 3600 feet of elevation gain. The average length of time it took hikers was around eleven hours according to hiking reports. Those same reports claimed the trail was both longer and steeper than the trailhead claimed. Sidney and I like to hike and while this sounded like a long rough day, I was excited to take on the challenge.

How to Move to France With Your Cat
We have a cat, an old cat. He came into my life in the arms of my son. On a visit home from grad school, Josh brought a tiny kitten, a self-possessed furball with a stubby tail. We worried about his survival, being so small, and we hustled him off to the vet to get all the necessary vaccinations and preventatives. Josh named him Willow after the central character in the movie of the same name. He was a little guy with spunk. The two of them returned to Josh’s school where Willow enjoyed his kittenhood in an old brownstone row house with a group of graduate math students.

There are times in all our lives when certain extraordinary people burst through our heavily barricaded doors straight into our hearts and completely change us forever. I am incredibly thankful to say that I’ve had a small handful of those kind of people in my life. And yet, if I’m being completely honest (and I try to be as frequently as possible), the sweet angel who has truly shaped my most important, formative years on this wildly changeable Earth thus far, was my family's dog.

Golden Isles of Georgia. Top Story - January 2022.
Travel and dogs. These two passions of mine don’t always intersect, but when they do, magical memories are formed. Sometimes my two miniature schnauzers, both brazen barkers, are left with a pet and house sitter while we travel to far off destinations. Not only am I uncomfortable with having them on an airplane, but I sometimes believe that Heidi and Ruffles prefer to stay in the security of their own house. Leaving them is hard (for me), and I sometimes think that they are the only reasons I come home from some locations - well, that and my wallet.
