adoption
Our guide to animal adoption; learn why, where, and how to prepare to adopt a cat, kitten, dog or puppy from an animal shelter or rescue group.
Shelters and Rescues
Watching Sarah McLachlan singing ¨Silent Night¨ with abused, malnourished dogs and cats cowering in the corner of a dirty cage is a commercial that most people recognize. The ASPCA put out these commercials to promote adoption from an animal shelter. Animal shelters are places for animals to go when they don't have a home. They might have been strays, their owners could not keep them, or any number of other reasons. Shelters, breeders, and pet stores are all places where animals are adopted or sold to people. Animal shelters have some glaring disadvantages compared to the other two options. Most people avoid shelters because they think that any animal they get from there would be ‘faulty’ or aggressive. This is a self-fulfilling prophecy. By leaving animals in the shelter and letting them become overcrowded and underfunded, disease and stress spread. Good, adoptable animals have to be put down due to stress-induced aggression, illness, and a lack of space.

Lots of Love in a Little Package
It was a rainy day, and a little girl by the name of Kaila stared out the window of her family's luxurious cottage, watching the rain pour down. The water was so thick, the sun was blocked out, and it seemed to make the world sadder. Kaila sighed and traced the path a raindrop had taken down the window with her finger.

With a Little Help
ThunderCat was so cute in the local shelter’s Facebook post. I’m always a sucker for old dogs, and my local shelter was looking for a fospice for an older shih tzu mix. She was in good health, but couldn’t be adopted out because she wasn’t spayed, and she couldn’t be spayed because she had a terrible heart murmur. She needed a home full of love and care until the end of her days, and I was happy to do it.

The Ties That Bind
Being creative helps bring families together. And in this case, helps families stay together. I’ve always enjoyed creating gifts for my family and friends. My craft closet is full of brightly colored fabrics, soft yarns and a wide variety of colored markers, among other tools of the trade. I handmake Christmas cards every year, using brightly colored cardstock, fun rubber stamps and unique materials. When a new baby joins the family, I make something heartfelt to mark the special occasion. I recently had the opportunity to mark eleven special occasions at once.

7 Reasons Why Pets Are a Good Idea
The need for a furry or feathery companion cannot be overemphasized. This is true especially in a world like ours where human companionship can get very fickle. These furry beings have largely become non-human parts of the family and we cannot deny that they have come here to stay.

No Ducking Way
An avulsion fracture is what the orthopedic surgeon in the city called it. That’s when bone fragments detach as a result of tendons or ligaments pulling away from the bone. Fortunately, it wasn’t as bad as the nurse practitioner at the hometown urgent care had told us the day before. We expected a full leg cast or even surgery, but my wife is a tough gal. The doctor’s prescribed treatment for her knee injury was only two weeks of no weight followed by light duty for a few more weeks after that.

8 THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE YOU ADOPT A NEW DOG
Adding a new member to your family is a big life decision. As cute as they are, dogs also come with not-so-cute chores and lifestyle changes. Before you go to the humane society or rescue shelter (adopt, don’t shop!), there are a lot of things you need to consider.

Honey we adopted a pitbull!
About five years ago, I was not really looking to adopt a puppy but I saw that a rescue group semi-close to home had a Boston Terrier puppy and she needed a forever home. We had lost our dog several months prior and my heart still ached for that loss but my husband loves Boston Terriers. I couldn't resist and I put in an application for her before even talking to him. Once I told him, he was more than happy to help along the process of adopting through a rescue group. A few days later, we found out we were approved and made a plan to travel the few hours to adopt her the following weekend.
