How Georgie Found Me
Once upon a time... It was just another July day when I went down to my uncle's car to see if he had a pack of cigarettes in his glove compartment (for him, not me). The busy main street just by our condominium complex was clogged with after-work traffic, which had gotten back to normal even only a few months after the pandemic had begun to rage in the United States.

Oh, Araby
Recently married and first-time homeowners, my wife and I decided to visit our local animal shelter to add to our family. They had just built a bigger building to better serve the area. Fortunately for us, a shelter cat had a litter of kittens that had just reached adoption age, and my wife was going to let me pick which one we took home. In the pen by the front window, the little kittens were playing on the floor and flipping over one another in their mock fights. They were cute, but they all looked the same to me. I watched them a little longer and pet a few, but they were more content with their game and each other than they were with my attempts to pet them. As the sun came out from behind a cloud, light shone on a kitten laying in a bed right in front of the window. She was laying on her side, and the sunlight gave her brown stomach a red hue. I decided to pet her. She immediately began to purr. Between her beautiful coloring and immediate purring, I was hooked. We made our “purchase,” a donation to help the animal shelter continue to help animals find their forever homes. Then we made the trip home.

Meet Loek
I met Loek in 2011. His name was Luca at the time. I just moved house and I explicitly asked the landlord if I could have a pet before I moved in. I had lived in house shares and student housing up until that point and I was never able to get a proper pet. I did have rats for a while, though. Bless them.

When 1 Becomes 2
I had already adopted a white and black kitten a few years earlier when living with my Mum but moving in with my partner into a top floor flat with a strict NO PETS ALLOWED policy meant that my little Bandit stayed in the family home while I flew the nest. After living that top floor life for a year with no bundle of fluff to love and hold each night my first priority and condition of moving once more was that I get a pet.

Boots our rescue kitty
The back story Before I get to the details of my recent adoption of a 2 year old tabby cat I want to share my personal back story that led to this moment. When I was a teenager I lived in the county. One spring just before I turned 14, my cousin’s family had someone clearing their land so they could plant a garden. This cousin lived about 2 blocks away and there were at least 3 other houses on the land between her home and ours. We could walk through the yards and fields without stepping into the road if we chose to visit each other.

Puppy Love
I wish I could describe my first love as a charming man with a mustache a beard, a defining charectaristics. I wish I could say that he had a gentle smile and strong hands, and deep voice that could make me say or do anything. Sadly, though I guess I'm not that type of girl.

The Tragic Death It Could Have Been If We Never Met And How This Little Guy Picked Me
I have nothing against dogs, or any other pet, so don't judge by the fact that I prefer cats. They're a more independent type of pet, usually, that is, and often times are just as entertaining as any other creature we adopt for our homes. Not to mention the fact that the little things don't require fenced-in yards to run if you're too busy to always be there for a dog. That said, if people have dogs, I do realize how much fun they are but the animal has to fit the owner as much as the owner has to fit the animal.

Francie the Sheepadoodle
Francie is my nine year old mini Sheepadoodle. I thought mini meant that he was going to be small but he’s a little on the big side! Either way I love him to death. I grew up in a family that loved cats so I never really knew much about dogs. I assumed I would always have cats since that’s what I grew up with but I am definitely a dog person. When I got Francie “Adopt Don’t Shop” wasn’t advertised that much. At least, I don’t remember reading about it. So I did purchase Francie from a breeder but honestly I don’t think anyone else wanted him. I sort of sensed something was up with him when out of a litter of about ten puppies he was the only one available. He was spoken for at one point but that person backed out. Then when all the puppies in the litter were posted online every single puppy was posing in a little tub. But not my Francie...he was sitting on the ground, no tub and no pose! Regardless of my hesitation, I went ahead with my purchase of him. I often wonder what would have happened to him if I wouldn’t have taken him. He was born in Texas and I live in Pennsylvania so there was no way for me to visit with him beforehand.
