Scruffy McDuffy
The thought came out of nowhere. Suddenly I realized I wanted to get a dog for my son. I'm allergic, but it's ok, I can take a medicine for that. I said out loud, "I want to get Zack a dog." My foster mom said, "No you don't! They are expensive!" But my mind was made up. The next day I went to the animal shelter to look at a beagle I saw on their Facebook page. I had also seen a chihuahua and said, "Ugh- not him." He was in rough shape and anyway I didn't want a shaky little chihuahua. I wanted a beagle. Those long floppy ears and big eyes were enchanting to me. I asked to walk the beagle I saw and was in for a surprise. I did not know they are crazy! At least this one was. As soon as the door opened she bolted so suddenly the leash came out of my hand. Thankfully she stopped to sniff the first tree she saw and I caught her. Lesson 1 for me: Hold on tight to the leash! I held it tight plus wrapped it a couple of times around my wrist. That beagle tried hard to tear my arm off! She jerked me this way and that randomly and even smacked into a parked car because she wasn't paying attention. That was the first time I had seen a car get hit by a dog. And then she barked. Ok, I admit it, I had never heard a beagle bark. Lesson 2: Beagles are loud! I knew she was NOT the right kind of dog for an apartment. Frazzled, I took her back and asked to walk the other beagle. I passed by the chihuahua and glanced at him. I said to him, "I don't want a chihuahua!" The other beagle was just as crazy as the first and I defeatedly returned it to the worker.

The Power of Patience
This is an essay I did in college. I have worked with horses for years, including racehorses and while none of the horses I worked with were ever treated unfairly, I still held fast to the viewpoint that they are trained much too young. This essay is not a rant against or for horse racing. It is merely my opinion on how one change could perhaps better the industry.

My love for Nova
I had dogs growing up but never have been a pet lover. It was not until I was older and in a relationship I did not want to be in anymore that I found out that a dog can be your best friend. My mate at the time and her sister came over to our house and gave me a male dog.I named him Nova. He was so independent so I was turned off by that real quick. I opened the front door and he jetted towards the front yard so I went in the house. He would come back to go in the back yard and eat. Then I do not know what made him want to come in the house but i let him in and he made himself welcome sniffing all around and then he jumped on my lap and from that moment on we had a bond. My mate at the time had her dog and her step daughters dog in the backyard and when I would let Nova in the back yard they would not let him eat and bully him and i would hear him bark and howl. I would hop up and go help him by letting him in the house and he would look back at the other dogs as if he were saying ha ha my owner let me in. Well I had to move and I could not take him where I moved to and I had a hateful and mean person I knew watch him at the time. I did not know that she was like that however I found out when I went back to get Nova to find out she let him go and he was no where to be found. I cried I do not know how many nights and I said I would never get another pet or get attached to another animal again as long as I lived. Well last year I kept telling my friend I wanted a puppy and she was like no Leslie you remember what happened last time. I ignored her and I searched high and low for someone that had puppies for sale. I asked everyone and nobody knew where to get a puppy from. Then my friend that I called nephew came over and I asked him and he said his friend had some puppies. I called her and now I have my baby his name is Boss and his name matches his personality. He gets mad if I am on the phone late at night and I better not pet or talk baby talk to another dog he goes off and will try to fight the dog. I never thought I would get so attached to another pet after what happened with Nova. I have to have a babysitter when I am going to be gone all day or overnight because he can not be home alone. I treat him just like he was my child. I wake up and make him oatmeal and toast in the morning and he gets a good dinner and yes he does get punished if he is bad and they hardly happens. I do not think I could ever live my life without Boss he loves me and is excited to see me no matter what now that is unconditional love for you. I could not ever be without a dog now. They make life better.

My Suzie Q
My Suzie Q Growing up in Hawaii was unique in many ways. I was born and raised on the big island and if you know the state of Hawaii at all, you know that the big cities are located on Oahu. To put this into perspective, the entire big island of Hawaii has a population of just over 217,000 people. With this in mind, know that as keiki (kids), my brothers and I always had to be creative in finding ways to amuse ourselves. From hiking, to exploring waterfalls, then when we got older, we would hunt in the forest surrounding our small town.

Adopting Charcoal
My parents run a business in another city and it has a backyard which is partially paved and partially overgrown with plants. My dad noticed a little black cat that came by a couple times and he gave her some milk and whatever treats that he could find. This kitty made a few visits over the course of a year. I had heard about her, but still hadn't met her yet. One day I was working on location and my dad was approached by the cat again. I went outside and walked slowly up to the kitty. She immediately took to me and I picked her up and held her. She was skin and bones, so hungry and lonely. She clearly didn't have a home and I think that she could tell that I loved to feed cats. I already had a cat at home. My first cat is a pretty black polydactyl cat that loves to roam the neighborhood all day and night. Her name is Millipede and I adopted her from the humane society where I got my childhood dog, who passed away several years ago. My grandmother gave me some cash for my birthday three years ago and I borrowed my mom's car and went to the humane society to look at cats. I got in a lot of trouble for bringing Millipede home, but by the time that I met Charcoal in the yard of my parent's business, Millipede was already a settled down outdoor cat, and fully accepted as a member of the family.
