Betty Boo
my partner and I got our first little dog when we first moved in together “Rambo” a teacup chihuahua.. we had always wanted a bulldog but couldn’t afford one, my father in law had friends that breed bulldogs and often had them sent back to them if there was any problems with them, not many people realise the upkeep of a bulldog, scrubbing in between their rolls with a toothbrush to keep them clean, they are not the type of dog that enjoy long walks along the beach, they start foaming at the mouth and are buggered walking not far from your house, they love to lay around and be loved.

Zoey the Globetrotting Cat
One night in Beijing, about three or four years ago, a Chinese man bought a kitten for his foreign girlfriend. The kitten was a small thing, with tiny flat ears and striped fur. Little flecks of orange dotted her coat. Her large eyes took up most of her face.

Stories From The Pack
Stories From The Pack Snaky In The Back Yard By Shelley Peterson It was a beautiful summer afternoon and my dogs and I took the opportunity to relax in the shade of a couple trees in our spacious back yard. There was the soft whisper of a breeze gently rustling the leaves of the trees as the birds sang in the distance. I was relaxing in my lounge chair reading a good book and sipping an ice-cold drink enjoying the afternoon. The dogs were scattered all around the yard, stretched out and snoozing. All was tranquil and right in our little world that afternoon. Or so I thought.

Siya Loves You
Work had been hectic that week so I was looking forward to the weekend. It was Friday morning and there were fires starting in my inbox left and right! Out of the corner of my ear I hear my phone vibrate a couple of times. I check it immediately because I will take any distraction to take me away from those stressful emails. It is a text, a link to a picture of a dog at a shelter. I opened the link and for the first time in my life, I saw her. She had the most beautiful eyes that I had ever seen. They were hazel brown, the biggest eyes you will ever have seen. Pretty golden freckles cover her face and a gold streak stretches from head to tail. She has a curious look on her face as if to say, “Where is my home?”

Rescue Dog With A Smile
The date was March 19th, 2020 and a stay-at-home order had been declared in California. COVID-19 had already begun to sink it’s spikes into the lives of thousands of Americans across the country, but now it was the Golden State’s turn to take action and, well, mine too. Living on the edge of Angelino Heights, the precipice of Downtown Los Angeles, I was caught between the spillage of Skid Row inhabitants and the skeptical punks of Echo Park that made going outside something I now feared. As someone who prefers the outdoors and lives to interface with strangers and friends abound, this was a type of challenge that required of myself something, something as simple as staying inside, alone and with myself; not completely alone, as I live with my boyfriend, but you understand what I mean. What could be worse than a virus spreading like wildfire in a state used to wildfires than having to sit on the couch and think about my own thoughts? In March of 2020, I would have asserted that nothing could be worse, but with the humbling efforts of time (and the news), I came to know that there are far more treacherous outcomes living in a world learning as it goes.

A very good boy
I wanted a dog. For my whole adult life, when I lived on my own, I wanted my own dog. A dog I chose. One I could call completely my own. The only other dog that had chosen me was technically the family dog. My parents brought her home at 19. She always slept with me, even after I moved out and came to visit. When I first saw her, I was disappointed that she was not a small puppy. She was a Doberman, Labrador, German Shepard mix. At nine months old, she was already the size of a medium dog. When I expressed my disappointment, my mother claimed, “Well she was on death row, but we could take her back,” knowing dang well I would not agree to that. I also knew she had no intention of returning her. My mom was as soft as I was. Her name was Angel, the people in the shelter named her. She jumped on my dad as soon as he saw her. The shelter personnel begged my father to take her. My dad is as soft as my mom and I when it comes to animals, especially rescues. They named him Simba.

Cornelia Street
People often don't think of what it means to have a small soul lock onto yours. The immediate connection you get when you first lay eyes on each other, and the trust that builds from the initial, "Hi, how are you? My name is..." But that connection is only built with humans. The connections that go far and beyond are the connections you make with souls that can't even speak to you.

January Again
I’ve written about my kitty before. I wrote about how January came into my life before, but she was just a little kitten then. She could crawl into my diet soda boxes and peer out at the world like a queen in her palace. She’s way more of a queen now than she ever was, even if she prefers to lay on my laundry basket, which is right by my desk.
