Natures Homeless Children
A brilliant hue of yellow streaked by my eye and I stopped to see what it was, realizing I'd never seen this before. The American Goldfinch. Truly, a beautiful bird. I watched it on a bush as I looked it up by color and size, amazed that it was just sitting there, its head bobbing around the way bird's heads tend to do. Then the thought hit me, what was it doing there? I have been around these parts for many years and never before have I seen one of these feather-covered creatures. The American Goldfinch does migrate for short distances, usually summering further north than West Central Illinois.

A Heart for Horses
The benevolence for and keen curiosity of animals that Lilly has continues to be one of her most defining characteristics at just 18 months old. Most notably, her little heart is full of a big love for horses. This toddler girl has a passion for all things pony. When it's quiet, I can often find her cheerily pretending with her play stables and horse figurines or delighting wholeheartedly at every horse picture in our books. Other days, she wants to ride and race on her wooden rocking horse, and whinny, bray and neigh the day away. I truly have a teeny tiny equestrian enthusiast.

Under Pressure
Diamond Had It Ruff How someone quickly got attached to an “ugly dog.” This story is about a friend of mine who got his girlfriend a dog because of me. You could've called me a stray dog, but only because at that time in my life I was homeless. This gentleman opened his door, and offered me a place for as long as I needed. It wasn't a grand place, however, it was a grand gesture. Unfortunately, it put him in a sticky situation on the simple fact that he had a girlfriend, and since – “I was another female in her man’s space.” Before we all knew it, she was breathing down my neck while my friend felt like she had her hands around his. Now let me set the record straight. My friend and I were, and still are, no more than just friends.

It's A Dog's Life!
It was a hot, humid, drizzly day in Indiana, earlier this July. One of my friends I had attended school with for what seems like forever - who ended up being the lead guitarist and vocalist for a successful, up-and-coming South Suburban Chicagoland band called OUTDrejas [outdrejas.com]. - was getting married! My older sibling was invited. That meant I had to mind the pets of the household.

White-tailed eagle
Most people have heard of the golden eagle, and would probably regard it as the king of Britain’s birds of prey, but less well-known is the even larger white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla). With a length of up to 90 centimetres (35 inches) and a wingspan of 240 centimetres (94 inches) it is even larger than the bald eagle of North America. Female birds are larger than males.

Bulls Like to Tell Stories
My name is Billy and I like to write. It is hard for me to write though because I have hooves. I have hooves because I am Billy the bull. Even though I am discouraged by the fact my hooves make it nearly impossible to hold a pencil or type one key on a board at a time, I write. I live on a farm, and I can not do much for the farmer like the regular bulls because I am not big like they are. But I can tell stories and the farmer likes to hear them. The farmer says if bulls could write maybe I would even win a competition or two.

Golden Summer
Last summer, I had moved into my first home, and there was nothing for flowers in the front of the home. I had to add some color and make things feel more homely. I had gone to the greenhouse and bought many beautiful flowers ranging from Morning Glories, Daylilies, and Snap Dragons. Since I never had a flowerbed before, I thought I would buy flowers that beginners can grow and not have to worry about killing them.

Feline Observations
The act of owning cats, the act of even deciding to be the sort of person who could stomach the possibility of owning cats, is proof that humans aren’t always the best judge of what is good for them and what is clearly very bad. I say this as a cat owner. I say this as someone who not only loves cats, but needs them in his life, someone who, without cats, would probably whine for the rest of his days, bereft of the feline presence and hating it, like Norma Desmond grieving her career. I’m the guy in the neighborhood who leaves cat food out on the porch, hoping to attract a stray or two, knowing full well that the nearest shifty opossum will eat the food if it can. I’m the guy who can’t sleep if there’s a known stray shivering in the cold outside, and who will, even in inclement weather, throw his coat and slippers on and search for it in the snow. No cat left behind. And yet, I say again, the act of owning cats is proof that humans possess an unhealthy obsession with dysfunction, for what is a cat if not the most mischievous, devious, manipulative creature ever to be invited into our homes?
