Life unleashed
It was that annual time again for the celebration of bluegrass music in the county of Waterford, in the Republic of Ireland. Our family had been fans of the various bands who played there at the festival held there that time of year. Although the weather there was only twenty seven degrees Celsius in the little town of Tramore: to us from one of the wettest areas of Northern Ireland, we denoted this occasional weather as equivalent to a torrid and scorching hot standard. We weren't at all accustomed to these sorts of temperatures, and were weaklings with regard tolerance to the sun.

Red
I only ever had one dog. We met when he was a small puppy. His mother was the neighbor's dog, and surely sensing that her master was about to take her litter away, she had decided to relocate them to take care of them in the wild, pushed by her sense of duty to keep them all together for as long as she could, regardless of the risks she was taking for herself or her offspring.

He Was the Strong, Silent Type
How can you fit a great love affair into a few words? When my daughter was about 7, I was newly divorced and we had moved into a big two-story house in my hometown of Redlands in Southern California. I thought she was old enough to care for a dog so we went to an adoption event where a young, slender Jack Russell Terrier sat nervously in a crate.

You are not alone
When we left the hospital, I was dead inside. It had been the longest two days of my life. Two days prior, I was ecstatic, heading to my ultrasound for our baby’s first unborn pictures. Instead, I found out my life was in danger from an ectopic pregnancy and emergency surgery was planned.

What Loving & Losing My First Cat Taught Me
I'd known this day would one day come. Over the past year, I'd seen my childhood cat, Oscar, lose weight despite eating, his eyes appear distant and a little cloudy, and his movements become slower and more labored. He was over 15 years old, estimated to be about 17 at the time.

Elliana ~ My ‘Designer Poodle’
It was early on the morning of April 23rd when the telephone rang. I was just getting ready to head out the door to do chores. My dear friend and neighbor wanted to know if I could help her out with a ‘situation’. She had just finished her morning check, in the lambing pen. Two of her ewes had delivered overnight, but there were 3 babies, and each ewe only wanted one. There was no way of knowing which one had twins.

Going, going, gone
I met Barnabus when he was still a fledgeling learning to flap his wings. He was just a couple of months old. In human year's I wasn't much older, I still had no body hair, not like Tyler. What a difference four years made, Ty at 16 was already contemplating shaving. I was still being mesmerized by a young barn owl.

Bo's New Freedom
It’s in his haunted eyes. When I drove to the city an hour away, the anticipation of meeting our new dog was filled with wavering trepidation. There were three sweet beagles available for adoption through the Beagle Rescue: all three cute as a button. They had their stories, their photos, their details pasted on the front page of the website like a dating site. Bo’s face was turned a little to the side, and I could just make out the speckles that identify him as a beagle. His backstory is what sealed the deal for me.

Widget's First Dog Show!
Why the Texas Classic? I'll be honest. The Texas Classic is no place to start a puppy, not even a puppy who has hung around at dog shows before. As a rule, I will start a puppy one of two ways. The first way is at a United Kennel Club (UKC) dog show, which will offer "non-licensed" puppy classes for registered and listed puppies starting at the age of three months. UKC shows are smaller than AKC shows. They are generally more relaxed and more family oriented than AKC shows. They also permit puppies to start at a younger age than AKC shows, which allow puppies to start at four months of age.
