For the love of dog
“Get yourself a dog” they said. “You will love it” they said. The truth is that I am still not sure why I was so resistant at the time. We had dogs as pets in our family growing up – as well as a menagerie of other animals. Both my parents had pet dogs growing up, so it was a normal part of family life. I was now living on my own, out of the family home and my resistance to a pet lasted all of two years until I found him. He stood amongst his sleeping pack and watched me as I moved closer to see him better. Still, I was resistant, and it took another three days before I went back with my sister and her kids to take another look. The pack was let loose, running away from us looking for some way to escape. This one, the one that had eyed me from three days earlier, came and sat at my nephew’s feet. Apparently, we chose each other. Decision made. He came to be named Charlie Boy and became the love of my life in an instant.

Sanderling Gets Adopted By Aquarium Staffer Who First Rescued Her in Maine.
On Labor Day in 2021, New England Aquarium supervisor Sarah Tempesta was enjoying a day on the beach in York, Maine, when she found a struggling wading bird. She ended up watching her throughout the day, off and on for hours, until she contacted a local wildlife facility. It was clear within the first minutes of observation that the sanderling’s wing was injured, due to it being sent at an unusual angle.

Changing Times
Remembering Millie We knew she was coming to an end, but it was hard to see old Millie declining. She was a special girl: a long-coated red Dachshund who had wandered up Dan's driveway almost six years ago. At the time, she was in a great deal of pain, with half-healed wounds caused by the boiling-hot liquid that had been poured over her back. We were obligated to advertise a "found dog," so we did--in the most half-hearted manner possible--while we treated her wounds and filled her starving belly with venison and fresh eggs and goat's milk. She was scared to death of us, fear-biting at us whenever we tried to clean her wounds and even when we tried to feed her.

Is a Great Pyrenees Dog the right dog for your family?
We are the proud owners of a Great Pyrenees dog named Bear but hundreds of these dogs are returned to shelters every year. In Texas right now there are 938 dogs in different shelters. I am a member of two Great Pyrenees owner's groups. Every week, someone posts that they want to rehome their dogs. Often, they get rehomed into situations where they end up then being surrendered to a pound and put down.

This is my beautiful boy. He hasn't always been my beautiful boy. As a young pup he was known as our very own land shark. His teeth were lethal and he had no idea of how to restrain himself from plunging them repeatedly into my forearms. I was covered in welts, gouges, bruises and cuts. His baby teeth were like nothing I have ever felt before and like nothing I want to experience again.

Stray Dog Life
I was as close to rock bottom as I would ever want to be at 20 years-old; failing out of school, unemployed, nihilistic and plain goddamned nasty to be around. I remember on the night of my birthday having a moment of not-clarity and convincing myself, “let’s fuck shit up even more and bring a wild animal into the picture.” Typical Andrew - if I couldn’t take care of myself, I’ll just take care of something else.

A Bitter-sweet Visit For Animal Lovers
Going to Zao I took a road trip with my Japanese friend during the summer to escape the Tokyo heat. We drove north to Miyagi Prefecture to visit the Zao Fox Village. Located in the forest, this secluded land preserve houses over 100 foxes as well as some other animals. The foxes walk, eat and sleep freely throughout the preserve and are so used to humans they are similar to stray cats hanging out waiting for food.
