Unbroken: My Journey of Self-Discovery and Resilience

How I Found Strength in My Weaknesses and Created a Life I Love

By Oluwatunmise OwolabiPublished about a year ago 3 min read

As I sit here, reflecting on my journey, I think of the many times when I felt lost, broken, at a crossroads, and unsure of what the future had in store for me. It is a situation most of us can relate to, one which I am proud to say I have overcome. My story is about finding myself, growing up, and being transformed, and I hope it will inspire you enough to embark on your own journey of self-improvement.

Trembling Dark Days

It all started five years ago when I felt myself being plunged into a crisis. My marriage and finance stood on the verge of collapse, my career at an absolute standstill, and it felt as if I was losing myself in the bargain. I had reached a dead-end, and I did not know how to get out of it. It was like being smothered by my fears, doubts, and insecurities.

I remember well the day I hit rock bottom. I sat in my living room amidst all the silence of the emptiness and just screamed. An hour or two must have passed because I was still crying, wondering how my life had reached this point. At this point, I felt like an utter failure at everything in life and a disappointment to all who knew me.

The Pivotal Moment

But something inside of me shifted that day. I knew then that I had a choice to make: I could go on, continuing down this path of self-doubt and negativity, or I could choose to take control of my life and make a change. I chose the latter.

I had started taking the first steps: regular exercise, healthier eating, and getting enough rest. Then I began to practice mindfulness and meditation as a way to calm my mind and bring myself back into the present.

The Journey Begins

As I started giving myself some care, my life started to change. I grew in energy, got more confident, and started perceiving the world in a new light. I found myself recognizing the fact that my life was at my discretion, and that it needn't remain constrained by all my fears and doubts.

I started to set goals for myself, both big and small. I wanted to learn new skills, to travel, and to pursue my passions. I started taking risks and stepping outside of my comfort zone; it was scary but also incredibly liberating.

Breakthrough

The biggest breakthrough that probably occurred for me was the realization that I did not have to be perfect. I had always been a perfectionist, and I had put so much pressure on myself to be flawless. But I realized that perfection is a myth, and it's okay to make mistakes.

That was a huge realization and really a turning point for me. I started releasing my need to control and perfect things, and instead, I started focusing on progress, not perfection. And that it is okay to make mistakes, take risks; it's through those mistakes that we learn and grow.

Growth

And then, as I went on, I realized I was getting more confident, resilient, and even more compassionate. I started to see the world from a different perspective-that I had the power to create my life.

I began to follow my passions, and new talents and skills began to unfold. I started taking care of relationships, and strong, supportive connections with others were built.

The Lessons Learned

As I now look backward in my journey, there is a collection of lessons that I have learned that I would wish to share with you.

1. Take care of yourself, and that is not selfish; it is a must. Make time for exercising, meditation, and at least a walk.

2. Perfection is a myth: Step out of perfectionism into progress and not perfection.

3. Challenge yourself: Take risks, get out of your comfort zone since growth happens outside of the comfort zone.

4. Live in the now: You will be present, through mindfulness and meditation, with thoughts of the moment.

5. You have the power to create the life that you want: Believe in yourself, your talents, and everything you're capable of; you have full powers to create the life you want.

Upshot

This journey of self-discovery and growth has been a wild ride of ups and downs, twists and turns. But it has been well worth it, as I have emerged more confident and compassionate.

Hopefully, my story has influenced and inspired you enough to begin the process of your own self-improvement. Growth is gradual; it is step by step. Never be afraid to take risks, try new things, and push yourself outside of your comfort zone.

You have within you the power to create the life you want, and I believe in you.
