We have all said it. Hell, we use it so often and so religiously that it became a safe place to fall. The comfort of those four words somehow gives an illusion that change happens overnight, without effort or practice. As if a single, simple wishful thought can do it on its own.
“Tomorrow will be better”.
But then tomorrow comes and is anything different? Did anything actually change in that 24 hours? Unless you use the toughness that is “today”, you will wake up the next morning and still be right there facing your same problems the same as you are right now. Wether that be mental or physical or what have you. You can’t push away responsibilities or challenges onto the next day without effort of some sort. Or without owning up to the fact that you’re scared or lazy.
That change started the second you said “tomorrow will be better”. You already know that something needs to change, or be done, and that, my friend, is step one. And that should definitely not lead you to immediately fall into the excuse of waiting until tomorrow. You aren’t building up courage like you may have convinced yourself you are. You’re only postponing what could make you an even better you. That step of admission you just took should be your catalyst. It should be your fire.
Use it all to your advantage, take absolutely everything and use it for your benefit. Be greedy with what is thrown your way. Especially the difficult and trying things. Take it as a sign that you are strong enough to be handed that full plate.
After you’re finished reading this I want you to take a moment and close your eyes. Take a deep breath, and release. Remind yourself that tomorrow can’t be better if it isn’t promised. Because tomorrow never is. Remind yourself of the beauty in the moment you’re in right now. Look in the mirror (physically go look in the mirror) and tell yourself you are done with the person inside who is holding so tightly onto those fears and excuses. Remember your best qualities and announce that they are enough. Look yourself in the eyes. Those great qualities you already possess are the building blocks for the bigger and better person you will unleash, and for the new qualities you will gain by being your bravest you. Remind yourself that the stronger person you plan to release tomorrow, is already staring back at you.
So do it right now. Whatever you promised yourself you would do tomorrow. Do it today. You’re saying you will eat better tomorrow? Start with your next meal. You’re wanting to speak your mind but your nerves tell you you’ll be braver tomorrow? You’re brave enough right now.
You are the same human you will be in that next 24 hours, and you’re capable of those same things, today. Speak your truth and share your emotion. There are countless reasons why we push things onto tomorrow, and the one thing they all boil down to, is uncertainty. It’s not that we will be better tomorrow, it’s that we are uncertain today, and we hope that tomorrow we will be sure.
We are uncertain of what “they” might think, uncertain that you will succeed, uncertain that you can move on, uncertain that you will make the right decision.
Believe in yourself and prove yourself wrong for having those doubts.
So start today. If you are blessed to wake up with breath in your lungs tomorrow, it will be unexplainably better if you had started today. And tonight will be so much better if you start right now.
