### Reflecting on Past Struggles
Although you are flourishing at 72, let’s take a step back to your mid-50s, a time when you faced considerable pain and mobility challenges. Can you share more about what you experienced during that period?
“Absolutely, Clare,” Renee begins. “My back issues began in my late 20s and continued into my 30s. Over the years, I managed the pain as best as I could, but by my mid-50s, my condition had significantly worsened. Despite my best efforts to maintain my fitness regimen, walking became increasingly difficult. At times, the pain was so intense that I would collapse to the floor. This was a stark contrast to my previously active life.”
Doctors had advised Renee years earlier to stop running, a passion she had enjoyed in her 30s. Initially, she ignored their advice due to the demands of being a single mother running a small business. The downtime required for surgery was simply not feasible. As she approached her mid-50s, the situation became dire, impacting her quality of life. She feared that she might end up in a wheelchair, which would severely affect her ability to work and stay active.
### The Turning Point
In her late 50s, Renee faced a particularly frightening period. She began preparing for a future that included sedentary activities, such as jewelry-making, in case her condition deteriorated further. Fortunately, she encountered an exceptional neurosurgeon who offered hope. Diagnosed with spondylolisthesis—a condition where the vertebrae overlap—she underwent a lower lumbar fusion of her L5 and S1 vertebrae around the age of 58.
Renee was apprehensive about the surgery, having explored various treatment options before making the decision. It felt like her last chance to regain a better quality of life. Despite missing activities like dancing and traveling, she decided to proceed with the surgery. The surgeon, though relatively young, was highly experienced and had performed the procedure numerous times. He assured Renee that, with proper rehabilitation, she could return to most of her previous activities, except for running and certain stretching exercises.
### Rehabilitation and Renewed Focus
After the surgery, Renee’s focus shifted to rehabilitation, which took about a year before she began to feel significantly better. Approaching her 60th birthday was daunting, especially as she was also navigating menopause. It became clear that she needed to take her health more seriously than ever before.
She consulted with a doctor who prescribed hormone replacement therapy, which proved to be a game changer. Additionally, he introduced her to a trainer with a Master’s in Kinesiology, who had extensive experience working with individuals with injuries and had previously worked with the Houston Texans football team. This trainer played a crucial role in Renee’s recovery and ongoing fitness journey.
