The Price of Gold

Labor and the True Value of Gold

By Monnade MixoumPublished about a year ago 3 min read

One day, the wife, driven by her anxieties, finally confronted her husband. "My dearest," she began, "you spend every waking moment trying to transform dirt into gold. I fear for our future. You know how much I love you, and all I ask is that you abandon this futile pursuit."

Her words, though spoken with gentleness, were met with a furious outburst. "I do this for you!" he thundered, his face contorted with anger. "One day, you will thank me for my efforts."

The wife, silenced by his outburst, retreated. Yet, deep down, she knew she could not continue living this way. She sought solace in her father, confiding in him her husband's obsession and her growing despair. "Father," she pleaded, tears welling in her eyes, "my husband spends every waking hour trying to turn dirt into gold. We are running out of money, and he refuses to listen to reason."

Her father, a wise and experienced man, understood her plight. He decided to visit his son-in-law. "I must confess something to you," he began, "that I have kept secret for many years. In my youth, I too was consumed by the dream of alchemy, of turning base metals into gold. I spent years experimenting, tirelessly searching for the elusive formula."

The young man's eyes widened with excitement. "Did you find it?" he eagerly inquired.

"Yes," his father-in-law replied, "but by the time I did, I was an old man, too frail to pursue it further. I had entrusted the secret to no one, until now." He paused, gazing intently at his son-in-law. "I have found someone worthy of this knowledge."

Overjoyed, the young man could barely contain his excitement. The old man, with a knowing smile, continued, "The first part of the secret lies in obtaining silver dust. This peculiar substance can be found on the underside of banana leaves. We must cultivate vast plantations of banana trees, reciting a potent incantation daily. Once the plants mature, we will meticulously collect the silver dust from each leaf, ensuring we gather enough to equal two pounds of silver."

"But that would require hundreds, perhaps thousands, of banana trees," the young man exclaimed.

"Precisely," the old man acknowledged. "This is a task that demands immense effort, one that I could no longer undertake. But I am willing to lend you the necessary funds to acquire land, plant the trees, and tend to them with utmost care."

Elated, the young man wasted no time. He leased a vast expanse of land, meticulously prepared the soil, and planted countless banana trees. Every day, he chanted the incantation, diligently weeding, fertilizing, and protecting his precious crop. Years passed, and finally, the trees matured. With painstaking effort, he collected the silver dust, achieving the two-pound threshold.

He rushed to his father-in-law, brimming with anticipation. "I have gathered the silver dust!" he declared.

"Excellent," the old man replied. "Now, bring me a bucket of soil from your plantation, and bring your wife with you."

Confused, the young man obeyed, fetching the soil and bringing his wife along.

The old man turned to his daughter. "My dear," he inquired, "while your husband collected the silver dust, what did you do with the bananas?"

"I sold them, of course," she replied, "and saved the money."

"May I see this money?" the old man asked.

His daughter, slightly hesitant, excused herself and returned shortly, carrying a heavy bag filled with gold coins. The old man poured the soil onto the ground and then emptied the bag of gold coins beside it. "Do you see now," he said to his son-in-law, "how to truly turn dirt into gold?"

The young man, humbled and enlightened, finally understood the true meaning of wealth. He had spent years chasing an impossible dream, neglecting the very means of prosperity that lay within his grasp. He learned that true wealth was not found in the transmutation of base metals, but in the cultivation of hard work, patience, and the love and support of his family.
