The Art of Mindfulness

Cultivating Conscious Awareness in Every Moment

By Oyale AdejoPublished about a year ago 3 min read

Mindfulness is more than just a buzzword; it's a transformative practice that can significantly impact our productivity, focus, and overall well-being. Recently, I came across an analogy in a book that beautifully illustrates the essence of mindfulness. The author asks us to imagine walking barefoot on a beach and spotting shards of glass ahead. Knowing the potential danger, we would tread carefully, paying close attention to every step. This heightened awareness is akin to how we should approach our daily actions.

Many of us struggle with procrastination, productivity, and focus. Our brains are often hijacked by desires and negative emotions beyond our control, leading us to engage in unproductive behaviours mindlessly. Whether it's the urge to play video games instead of working or endlessly scrolling through social media, these actions stem from a lack of moment-to-moment awareness.

Inspired by the book, I decided to start my morning with intentionality. Instead of reaching for my phone upon waking, I consciously chose each action: brushing my teeth meticulously, drinking water, taking my vitamins, and taking time to workout. By 8:00 AM, I was outside, ready to work. This deliberate start contrasted sharply with a typical morning where I might waste time on my phone, eat unhealthy food, and delay important tasks.

Most people drift through life, letting external factors dictate their actions. Practising mindfulness requires a conscious effort to be present in every moment. A friend of mine recently attended a driving awareness course in the UK after running a red light. The course introduced a technique called "commentary driving," where drivers verbally note every potential hazard on the road. This method trains drivers to stay alert and responsive.

This technique can be applied to daily life. As you go about your day, narrate your actions and intentions. Ask yourself what you should be doing and whether your current actions align with that goal. For instance, if you find yourself aimlessly scrolling through Instagram, remind yourself of more productive tasks like brushing your teeth, eating breakfast, or going to the gym. Verbalizing your actions forces you to confront unproductive behaviours and choose more beneficial activities.

Mindfulness is a skill that requires consistent practice. Our actions are often driven by subconscious habits and reactions to environmental stimuli. By training our minds to focus on the present, we can develop selective attention, filtering out distractions and honing in on what's important. Meditation is a powerful tool in this process. Contrary to popular belief, meditation isn't just about sitting in silence. It's about focusing on a single point and bringing your attention back whenever it wanders. This practice strengthens your ability to concentrate and remain present.

In contrast, activities like scrolling through social media train our brains to crave constant novelty, making it harder to focus on one thing. To become more mindful, practice intentional focus daily. Over time, this will give you greater control over your emotions, desires, habits, and behaviours.

Mindfulness can help you overcome addictions and compulsive behaviours by making you more aware of your actions and their consequences. Imagine walking down a beach filled with broken glass, being mindful of every step. Similarly, be conscious of each moment to avoid unproductive or harmful behaviours. Although challenging initially, this practice can rewire your brain to seek healthier activities like meditation, reading, or educational content.

The more control you gain over your actions, the more productive, efficient, and goal-oriented you become. By cultivating mindfulness, you can transform your life, making conscious choices that lead to greater fulfilment and success. Mindfulness is not a destination but a journey that requires ongoing effort and dedication. Each step you take towards being more mindful brings you closer to a life of purpose, clarity, and intentionality.

In a world filled with distractions and constant demands on our attention, mindfulness offers a way to reclaim control and live with intention. By being present in each moment, we can navigate life's challenges more effectively and create a path that aligns with our true desires and aspirations. So, take a moment, breathe deeply, and begin your journey towards mindfulness today. The rewards of a mindful life are immeasurable, leading to greater peace, productivity, and fulfilment in every aspect of your existence.
