How to heal fully and properly.
Tales of a Community Occupational Therapist
Take a moment and think of your three favourite activities. Is it cooking? A sport? Reading? Gaming? Now, imagine you wake up tomorrow and your dominant hand no longer functions. Can you still do your favourite activities? Odds are likely that you need two hands to engage in at least one, if not all, of the activities that you listed. A more important question, can you still do your necessary activities with only one hand, like getting dressed, feeding yourself, using the toilet, or showering? How do you think you would feel if you suddenly needed help with all of these activities?

In Memory
January 1 2017, Happy New Year, but little did I know my life was about to change forever. I had been coaching cross country since 2008 and teaching since 2007 at a local high school. I still teach there, but one incident would rock my world and change me as a person forever.

Many Hats
“I’m a single mom of three and finally saved up enough to leave my toxic relationship and move into an apartment. I’ve been here for five months, and I just found out that I must leave everything again...can you help? How do I find housing? How do I afford new toys for my kids? How do I afford the medical help I need? Please help, I feel alone and don’t know where to turn.” This is one of the many stories I hear time and time again.

Heal
I seek to mend. It's what I aim to do. I’m not a doctor or a nurse. I’m not a seamstress or a therapist or a mechanic or a minister of those who sin. I was an average human being, bumbling along life’s mercurial trail, when I stumbled and tripped and eventually fell. It became clear to me that change was the key. Change was inevitable, so why not embrace it and keep it real. Life threw some lemons my way, as it frequently likes to do, and I abhore lemonaide plus citrus juice stings my wounds. Peering outside my narrow box, I knew not what I was looking for, I just knew I needed happiness to be what's in store. Ergo, finding joy and self-love became my mission. I had to get creative without any funding to budget or mentor to whom I'd listen, so I embraced my inner destroyer and will love myself right out of my prison. I did, however, need an income and now, as a new parent, a legacy in good example became an important ideal for my child to inherit. So I sent fear on a well deserved vacation and took a open and honest inventory of my space. In my plenty years thus far, my heart had always been lightest when I was immersed and dutiful in my yoga practice, So I busted out all my old notes and dusted off my tired text books- because if this was going to work, I needed to practice, plan and review. I was blessed to have trained in the craft of which 6000 years of healing techniques and secrets had been preserved.

Boys to Men
In some parts of the world, more emphasis is laid on the grooming of the girl child in terms of how they should act and behave especially in relation to becoming good wives and mothers. Yes, we all want our girl child to develop into a responsible woman, but there is a lot more she can do and achieve as an exceptional wife and mother. In ensuring this, however, not much attention is paid to the boy child, which leads to them growing up with a sense of privilege over the girl child.

Healthcare Hero
Being a caregiver runs in my blood. Going back to World War II in 1939, with my great grandmother Sarah Massey. She was a member of the American Army Nurse Corps (ANC for short). Her employment ran until 1945, after the war ended, but her journey wasn't over. A young, handsome German soldier named John Joseph Derscha was badly wounded with a bullet in his left thigh. She dutifully cared for him until he was fully recovered, fell deeply in love, and went back to America together. Since then, the women in my family have answered the call to the unpredictable profession of nursing. I'm no exception. While my dream job is to be a published author, my passion lies in my position in healthcare. Since March 12th, 2012, I have been a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA), dedicating my life to providing quality care to all individuals.

MY TESTIMONY
When I woke up on August 3 2021, my only goal was to finish moving into my new home. After loading up the back end with old junk, I jumped in my old dodge truck and headed to the city landfill to dispose of it. Once I got there, I began to reach and pull for everything in sight. Items that were loose and not in a box, I could grab 2 or 3 pieces at a time. But when I reached for a brown box that was right in front of me, it’s like an electrical shock went all over my body.

Help Me
In this world today, it's tough. People are losing friends and loved ones by the minute. Some of us are stressed because jobs have been shut down. Some are struggling to maintain their daily lives. Some are in constant battles with other people views, boundaries, and/or other things. Mostly, some of us are in constant battles with ourselves.

Have the courage to burst your comfort bubble
It's all too simple to fall into a rut. We are relaxed yet uninterested. Things that used to thrill us now appear mundane. The issue is that we've allowed life to become mundane. We need to discover new methods to make life interesting again, even if they are little. Leaving your comfort zone requires bravery, but you will be rewarded handsomely for your efforts.
