Journey of ABJ Abdul Kalam
Inspirational Story of ABJ
In the small coastal town of Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, a boy named Abdul Kalam was born on October 15, 1931. He grew up in a modest family; his father was a boat owner and his mother a homemaker. Despite their humble means, they instilled in him the values of hard work and determination.
From a young age, Abdul was curious about the world around him. He would often gaze at the sky, dreaming of flying. However, his family struggled financially, and young Abdul took on odd jobs, including selling newspapers, to support his education. Each day was a challenge, but he approached life with enthusiasm, believing that education was his ticket to a better future.
As he progressed through school, Kalam faced societal barriers, yet he remained steadfast in his pursuit of knowledge. His hard work paid off when he earned a scholarship to St. Joseph’s College in Tiruchirappalli. There, he excelled in physics and later enrolled in the Madras Institute of Technology to study aerospace engineering. It was a leap from his small town to the bustling city, filled with new experiences and challenges. But Abdul was determined to succeed.
After graduating in 1955, Kalam joined Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, where he began his career in aircraft design. However, his passion truly ignited when he joined the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). Leading the project for India’s first satellite launch vehicle, SLV-3, he faced immense pressure and numerous setbacks. The team encountered failures, and doubts crept in. Yet, Kalam’s spirit never wavered. He encouraged his team to learn from their mistakes, emphasizing resilience over despair.
Finally, in 1980, their hard work bore fruit when SLV-3 successfully launched the Rohini satellite into orbit. The nation celebrated, and Abdul Kalam emerged as a hero in the field of space technology.
His journey didn’t stop there. In the 1990s, Kalam moved to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), where he was instrumental in developing ballistic missiles. Under his guidance, India successfully tested the Agni and Prithvi missiles, asserting the country’s technological prowess. Throughout these achievements, Kalam remained humble, often reflecting on his roots and the importance of serving humanity through science.
In 1998, during a pivotal moment in Indian history, Kalam led the country’s nuclear tests, demonstrating India’s strength on the global stage. Yet, even amidst these successes, he emphasized that science should be a tool for the betterment of society, not just a demonstration of power.
In 2002, Abdul Kalam was elected as the President of India. His presidency marked a new chapter in his life, as he became known as the "People’s President." He traveled across the nation, especially to schools and colleges, sharing his vision for India and inspiring countless young minds. "Dream, dream, dream," he would often say, "Dreams transform into thoughts, and thoughts result in action." He made it his mission to encourage students to pursue their passions relentlessly.
After his term ended, Kalam continued to engage with the youth. He wrote several books, including his autobiography, "Wings of Fire," where he narrated his life story and the lessons learned along the way. He spoke openly about failures, declaring, "If you fail, never give up because FAIL means ‘First Attempt In Learning.’"
Tragically, on July 27, 2015, while delivering a lecture at IIM Shillong, Kalam passed away. His final moments were spent inspiring young minds, a fitting end for a man whose life was dedicated to uplifting others.
Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s journey from a small town boy to a respected scientist and leader is a powerful testament to the human spirit. His story is not just one of personal achievement; it serves as a beacon of hope for anyone who dares to dream. Through his life and teachings, he reminds us all that with determination, humility, and a commitment to serve others, we can rise above our circumstances and make a lasting impact on the world.
