I talked yesterday of adversity and difficulty, how inevitable it is in life, and how we should seek out the opportunities that these times bring, rather than focus on all the negatives of the situation. Easier said than done indeed, but more than possible, especially the more we learn to strengthen our mindset, and work on our emotional control. There's one particular trait that we all possess within us, that is pivotal, when it comes to dealing with and overcoming times of adversity, failure, and loss. That trait is none other than resilience. Resilience is possessing the ability to recover quickly from difficulty, challenge, failure, and adversity. Now we do each possess resilience within us, however the vast majority of us only draw on it when we have no other option but to, such as when it's life threatening, or something that impacts our way of life, or if it disrupts our method of survival, or if it threatens our health, or maybe it places our family in danger. We then we normally would do whatever it takes to negate the situation, and we work hard to find a solution to overcome the adversity. Where we should also be applying our resilience more though, is in the pursuit of our goals, our happiness, and our success.
None of us are exempt from trekking through life without facing times of difficulty, adversity, challenge, and loss, but when we make the decision to pursue our goals, we then in fact invite more of these tough times into our life. It's like life says to us, "if you want something good, then prepare to be severely tested". The problem is, most of us fail to draw on our resilience with these particular challenges and adversities that life throws at us. They are disruptive to the pursuit of our goals, they are inconvenient, and like many of the adversities, hardships, and difficulties, that life would normally throw at us, they take us to great depths. I think most people are well aware that the journey towards their goals isn't going to a breeze, and that they will encounter challenges, however I think most people also underestimate how tough these challenges actually are, how unrelenting they are, how much work is required to overcome them, and how patient they need to be before they begin to see any significant results. With these constant challenges and constant failures, unlike those adversities in life where we are forced to draw on our resilience, we have an escape route, which comes in the form of quitting. We succumb to failure. We are not forced into having to take action, or demonstrate our resilience, because we are only giving up our goals, which leaves us to basically return to life as it was before we started the journey, and although we are not happy with it, we are accustomed and familiar with it. We don't view it to be a massive sacrifice to give up, but instead, we take on the belief that success was just not meant to be, or basically impossible to achieve.
Most people take the view that when encountering failure, that it signals finality, a clear indication that success is not going to eventuate. How wrong they are! Failure, adversity, difficulty, hardship, challenge, and the like, they are all common on the road to success, but the beauty is, they provide us with incredible opportunities to learn, grow, and demonstrate our resilience. If actions don't work, it doesn't mean that success is unachievable, it simply means we need to pivot, adjust, and make changes. We are going to fail many times over before we achieve success, that's only normal. With that in mind, it then becomes a case of dealing with failure, and managing how we handle adversity. That's where resilience is needed! It's about adjusting our mindset from believing that we have failed, to understanding that an action simply didn't produce the results we sought after, and we just need to change it. It's about viewing what we would normally class as failure, into being the perfect opportunity to learn and reveal the potential within us. It's about proving to ourselves that no matter how many times we are going to get knocked over, we are going to return to our feet, and do whatever it takes to achieve our goals. It's about finding a solution, despite when all avenues appear blocked. The simple fact to remember is if you believe that giving up is the best option for you, then clearly your goal isn't strong enough. That goal doesn't hold enough importance and value for you, nor do you have an emotional attachment to it. If you genuinely want to achieve something you desire so greatly, you will always do whatever it takes to achieve it. That drive and determination, is what determines resilience. It's that same drive and determination that we possess and reveal, when we encounter the typical adversities, difficulties, challenges, and hardships, that life throws at us. Our resilience shines through in those situations, as we have proven so. Now let's unleash that resilience within us, and prove that nothing will stand in the way of achieving our goals, that no setbacks, challenges, and failures, are going to prevent us from success. Set goals that emotionally drive you, begin that journey towards your goals, embrace those adversities, overcome those failures, and never give up. Resilience rewards with results.
