Is it morning already?!
More sleep equals more peace
Those beautiful moments before the alarm goes off, where you are still in a state of deep peace and there is nothing else to do. Ah those are the best! Then the alarm goes off and it's suddenly back to reality. Living in a society that's always go, go, go is definitely not easy. There is always this pressure to be productive and make sure you're living up to the standard. Sometimes it feels when we sleep is the only time we really get to stop and rest.
With our phones always only a glance away, it's hard to leave the constant distraction of the world around us. Yes, we can meditate and do yoga or other practices to support us. But, I know for myself even in those states the thoughts can start to creep in. Like, "I better not forget to send that email later, what should I make for dinner tonight, what should I wear to that meeting today?" It's like a 5 year old child just learning about the world asking you everything they can think of. All you want is just one moment of peace not to think about anything. So you keep breathing and hope these annoying thoughts subside.
As you may have guessed, this led to the New Year's resolutions to not give in to distractions and find more time for peace. Even if that means just taking a nap. I mean kids take naps all the time why can't adults? It should be a normal thing for everyone.
When meditating or other practices aren't stopping the constant chatter in the mind, I think taking a nap is a beautiful way to cultivate the peace we're all looking for. Just think about that refreshed feeling you get when you know you got the right amount of sleep. You feel like a new person! One that is ready to take on the day and all the current to do list has to offer.
Imagine how beautiful the world would be if we all got the amount of sleep and peace our bodies and minds are craving. There would be less arguments, less mistakes, and an overall increase in the amount of peace in the world. We could bring peace to the world just by taking a nap! Who isn't down for that?
I think meditation, breathwork, and other spiritual practices are great don't get me wrong. I'm just saying we all have times when there is just too much going on (especially the past couple of years) and tuning in just makes us want to tune out. So instead of using the usual coping mechanism or just distracting let's try taking a nap. It's a great alternative to the mindless scrolling on social media or feeling guilty that you couldn't concentrate or "do it right".
I know what you're thinking, sometimes just falling asleep is hard. I get you. That's when I listen to relaxing music. There are binaural beats with theta or delta waves that can put you right into that perfect state. Like I said before, it's way too easy to get distracted in the world we live in today. But, we always have the power to choose our distractions and if it's helping is it really a distraction? Music always helps me out when I need it.
Part of all of this though, I believe, is really being present with yourself. Instead of listening to me or anyone else, we all have to find what works for us. Nobody knows us better than we know ourselves (believe it or not). The next time you're feeling stuck try asking yourself what will help you. The answer might surprise you, but, I promise it's always right.
This year instead of setting hefty resolutions that aren't really helping us with anything let's keep it simple. I challenge you to ask yourself what would bring me more peace? Even if your answer is just more sleep, like me. Don't judge or think it's not enough. Remember what more sleep could do for the world. I really believe more sleep equals more peace. The more we let ourselves sleep and be in peace, the better we can show up for what really matters to us.
We all have those mornings where we wake up thinking and for me saying "It's morning already?!" Instead of trudging through the day and drinking way too much coffee, let's give ourselves time to take a nap and find our peace. Just 10 minutes is enough to change the way we feel. And if we could all just slow down and give ourselves what we need, oh what a beautiful world it would be!
