He said something that my heart held onto.
When does sadness stop being a normal human emotion and become a life-altering condition? Leonard Tillerman
Sadness is a normal human emotion balanced by happiness. It becomes a life-altering condition when we hold on tightly and for too long, allowing it to seep into our actions, choices, decisions, intentions, and ultimately, our lives.
The topic is Depression.
In fact, in 2025, the World Health Organization estimates that almost 6% of the world’s population suffers from depression. Leonard Tillerman
That six percent is what’s reported. The unreported conditions are about ten times more. Many humans are unaware that they are depressed. In my culture, depressed people hide their symptoms, and it plays out in their lives and how they live, adding more pain to their lives, affecting everything they do and touch. Their loved ones become collateral damage.
Look at this plant. It is growing from a large rock. It looks happy and healthy, despite its origins.

Our sadness comes from somewhere. This brick wall appears barren, complex, and solid, lacking the resources to sustain life. Yet, look at the number of different plants that have managed to survive through what many would consider hell. I suffer from depression. I go back into my life and question everything.
Why the hell am I sad? I am a survivor, just like these plants emerging from the rock. Some of us can survive in difficult situations and appreciate the value of life.

We call this catcus Tuna, we drink it to remove blood clots and to wash our hair. Too much was picked, and this was left. It began to grow and reproduce without the help of nature or humans.
How?
It’s alive, so it decided to go on living with what it can use to survive until there is nothing left. Humans have so much help available, yet many still fail.

This plant doesn’t look sad, yet its living condition is what some of us would call impossible. How did these plants manage to live, grow, and look so healthy and beautiful despite their living condition?
Many humans have it good and still allow depression to cling until it destroys their lives.

These plants focus on life. Living. Growing. Motivating. Inspiring, for me it is. They are telling me that if they can survive in their environment with almost nothing, I should do the same with all of my resources.
What if we focus on the best part of our lives and be happy for it?

What if we learn from our sadness and unhappiness, understanding that they are a natural part of life’s emotional balance? And we have a choice.

We can balance our lives by learning from our sadness, understanding its causes, and finding positive and sensible ways to appreciate life with what we have.

More than 8 billion humans worldwide know life. None of us knows death. So why not live with the good we know and have, like these plants, living and thriving, giving back the best to the earth?

They don’t care where they are or if they have enough to eat. They make the most of what they have and give their best.

What if all of us do the same? Give our best no matter what life hits us with. Would sadness or depression have room to roam, thrive, harm, or hinder us?

I haven’t taken medication for depression in years, although it visits often. I find my cure or remedy and heal myself every time it tries to send sadness my way.
Find ways to heal yourself from Depression and its sadness. You have a choice. Choose happiness.
Thnak you for reading this piece. I hope you enjoyed it.
