Most people sleep walk through their entire lives because they unconsciously react to the various situations that present themselves rather than consciously thinking things through before taking action. I teach my clients the importance of taking the time to make sure they understand all the facts related to whatever situation they may be dealing with as well as the pros and cons of each possible decision so they can make the best decision possible for themselves and others.

I teach my clients that their self-esteem, life goals, understanding of what constitutes healthy boundaries, choice of life partner, and the ability to be good parents are all the result of the way they were raised by their caregivers. By teaching people about the affect their upbringing has on their lives and relationships and showing them how they can replace dysfunctional behavior with practical behavior they can create the type of life they want rather than settling for what they’ve come to see as their inevitable fate. I enjoy helping people build self-confidence and teaching them how to be reasonable in all their dealings with others.

I also love helping people develop, strengthen, and maintain healthy boundaries. I teach my clients how and why it’s important to forgive those who have hurt them deeply. My clients learn that forgiveness is not a license for the other person to walk all over them. If the person whom they’ve forgiven is still treating them with disrespect they need to end their association with that person. By ending all contact with this negative individual they show the other person what self-respect looks like.

I let my clients know that it’s healthy to forgive others and oneself and to be open to the possibility of reconciliation. Reconciliation with the people that harassed and bullied us while we were growing up is certainly possible but it may never happen and that’s okay. In order for reconciliation to take place the person who victimized us needs to acknowledge that what they did to us was wrong and prove their remorse by changing their behavior. It’s meaningless for the person who harassed us in the past to say they’re sorry and then continue to mistreat us!

I help my clients to understand that no one has a perfect life filled with perfect relationships. Some people may appear to have lives and relationships that are problem free but this only an illusion. Since everyone is imperfect there are going to be problems in everyone’s lives and relationships. People who are wise, humble, and honest will be in a better position to address and resolve problems that come up and avoid causing unnecessary difficulties for themselves and others. My clients also learn that no one is going to share their dirty laundry with strangers. After learning that everyone faces challenges in their lives and relationships my clients focus on making the best of their own lives and relationships rather than comparing themselves to their neighbors.

My clients learn how to gather all the facts on any topic and avoid making assumptions. Armed with the facts my clients are able to make wise decisions. My clients also learn that good mental health is necessary for living a great life and that seeking assistance for mental health challenges is a sign of strength rather than a sign of weakness.
