I Was Broke, Embarrassed, and Out of Options

There’s a unique kind of silence that comes when you realize you can’t afford something as basic as your school fee.

I remember sitting in the principal’s office, watching the way he looked at me—not angry, not disappointed, just… distant. Like I was another case, another number. He said, “You can’t sit for your midterms until the dues are cleared.”

I nodded like I understood. But I didn’t. What I understood was this: my friends were going to exams. I was going home.

No one teaches you how to explain poverty without sounding like you’re making excuses. That day, I didn’t even try. I just said my family was “handling it” and left.

From Desperation to Determination

That night, I barely slept. I couldn’t stop thinking: What if I never fix this? What if this is my life? Always behind, always left out, always hoping someone helps me?

I didn’t want to be pitied. I wanted to be in control.

The next morning, I opened my beat-up laptop and typed the words that started everything:

“How to earn money online as a student with no experience.”

I had typed it before. A dozen times. But this time, I was desperate enough to act on what I found.

The First Dollar Meant More Than You Can Imagine

I tried everything from watching ads to filling out surveys. Nothing worked—until I stumbled on freelance writing and user-submitted platforms like Vocal.Media.

I didn’t consider myself a “writer.” English wasn’t even my first language. But I thought, If others are making money telling their story… maybe I can too.

So I wrote a short story about failing an exam and what it taught me. I submitted it. Two days later, I earned $3.62.

It wasn’t much. But to me, it was proof. It was the first time the internet paid me—not for watching something or clicking aimlessly, but for using my mind.

That was the day I stopped thinking like a victim.

From $3 to My First Full School Fee

After that small win, I doubled down. I spent every free hour learning:

How to write headlines that grab attention

How to structure stories for Vocal

How to post on Fiverr and offer basic gigs

How to market my stories on Reddit and Facebook groups

I wasn’t making thousands, but every little bit added up. Some days, I made $5. Some days, $20. And after four months, I earned enough to pay my school fee.

I remember walking into the office, holding the payment receipt, and smiling at the same man who once told me I couldn’t sit for exams.

This time, I didn’t owe anyone anything.

How I Did It Without Fancy Gear or Magic Skills

Let’s be honest: I don’t have a MacBook. I don’t live in a big city. I don’t have an uncle who’s a CEO.

What I had was:

A cheap laptop

Wi-Fi that cut out often

A deep fear of staying broke

And a dream that wouldn’t leave me alone

Here’s the truth: You don’t need to be gifted. You just need to be consistent.

I started ugly. Bad grammar, poor formatting, zero likes. But every article I wrote was better than the last.

Now I’m building a side income. I’ve bought books with my own money. I even helped a friend pay their exam fee.

I’m still growing—but I’m no longer stuck.

To Anyone Reading This and Feeling Hopeless

Maybe you’re where I was. Maybe you're tired of “opportunities” that lead nowhere. Maybe you think this kind of story only works for other people.

But what if you’re next?

Don’t wait for someone to save you. Learn a skill. Start small. Tell your story.

Here’s how you can begin:

Sign up for Vocal.Media (or similar platforms)

Write one article — even if it's messy

Keep improving — read, write, repeat

Promote your work. Share it, even if you feel shy.

Use every dollar wisely. Treat this like a mission.

One story at a time, I’m changing my life. And so can you.

My Advice? Write Your Pain. Then Turn It Into Power.

Your broken moments, your struggles, your “I can’t believe this is my life” situations — they’re not the end. They’re the beginning.

I used to be embarrassed by my situation. Now I write about it.

And people read. And I get paid. And I pay my school fees. With my words.

If that’s not power, I don’t know what is.
