How I Made $100 on Vocal in 30 Days

My Early Roadmap to Making Money as a Writer Without a Following

By Echoes of LifePublished 6 months ago 3 min read

When I first stumbled upon Vocal, I had zero followers, zero writing experience, and honestly, zero expectations. I wasn’t trying to be famous—I just wanted to see if I could make some money doing what I love: writing.

A month later, I had made just over $100.

Not thousands, of course. But real money. From my words. Online. It was enough to convince me that this path could lead somewhere.

Here’s exactly what I did—and what you can copy.

1. I Treated Vocal Like a Creative Business

At first, I thought of Vocal like a blogging platform. But the moment I saw it as a content business, everything changed.

I gave myself a content goal: post 2-3 stories a week. I brainstormed in categories I knew were supported by voice — motivational, fiction, life lessons, and lists. I wrote pieces that either taught something, told a story, or offered value.

I knew a viral story could change everything — but I didn’t rely on luck. I focused on consistency.

2. I studied the leaderboards.

I spent time reading the top stories in each community. I paid attention to the headlines, structure, and tone. Almost all of them had:

A catchy headline.

Subheadings for readability.

A mix of personal voice + broad relevance.

Clear takeaways or emotion-based content.

I wasn’t copying — I was modeling. If a title like “I Ghosted My Soulmate – Here’s Why” was trending, I asked: What emotional pull does it have? Can I write something just as interesting but true to me?

3. I improved my headlines

Your headline is 80% of your click-through potential.

Instead of “My thoughts on burnout,” I would write:

💥 “I burned out, quit my job, and found myself”

Instead of “Why I love mornings,” I would write:

💥 “The 5 a.m. habit that cured my anxiety”

Headlines aren’t clickbait when they’re truthful and catchy.

4. I took advantage of challenges (and submissions)

Vocal Runs regularly pays out challenges. I submitted three this month. One story earned a small bonus from the Top Story Spot. Another brought in new readers who explored my profile.

Even if I didn’t win, I knew that each challenge entry increased my visibility—and gave me a creative outlet to run with.

5. I promoted—but smartly

I didn’t spam links. But I did:

Share my stories on Reddit writing groups (where allowed)

Post on Medium and include a CTA linking to my Vocal page.

Message friends who I thought would genuinely enjoy a piece.

About 30% of my reading came from external traffic I generated.

6. I focused on “evergreen + emotional” topics.

Some stories were good because they stayed relevant. For example:

✅ “Red Flags I Ignored That Cost Me Everything”

✅ “7 Habits That Changed My Life in 2024”

✅ “How My Toxic Ex Taught Me to Start a Business”

Personal stories with broad takeaways perform well on Vocal because they are relevant as well as deeply relatable.

Results: $102.38 in 30 days

📝 11 published stories

💬 1 tip from a reader ($5!)

💡 Steady read-based earnings (~$0.03–$3 per story per day)
