Happy vs Content

Today is just another day full of every emotion. I realize more all of the time, that we were created to feel. Not happy or sad or angry, but to feel and to love.

We have a “normal” range, then those who feel more than or less than. I always thought HAPPY was the goal, but it’s not. Normal is more accurate, but if we get into what that really looks like, I find just one word.

CONTENT

I can already hear what you might be thinking, because I have thought the same thing. “Content” doesn’t really seem like a great place to be. It seems like a place that you want to strive to leave and “find your happiness”. Stay with me for just a minute though, and maybe you can see where I’m coming from.

When I say that I am content, I mean that I am within a normal range of every feeling. I go through a range of emotions, but at the end of the day, I am doing okay. I mean that I sleep peacefully at night and wake up every morning, ready for a new day and full of hope. I know that my bad moments don’t last and things will get better. I mean that I am good with what I already have and have peace of mind for my future. I mean that I may not know what tomorrow holds, but I do know that everything will turn out alright. I have faith and am at peace. I have left my yesterdays where they belong and can look back at the memories without fear of what remembering might do to my brain or my heart. I accept the challenges I have faced and overcome and consider myself to have won those battles. I can keep my heart open and ready to love all who enter my life, no matter the hurt I have seen previously.

I am CONTENT with my life, past or present, and the world.

This brings me to my question for you. What is it that you believe yourself to be searching for? Are you looking for the right kind of joy, happiness or peace? Are you seeking revenge on the world and those who hurt you, because you think this will bring you closure? We often make ourselves these promises that once we have this one thing, we will be settled and the world will be right. Our minds will be able to move on from our troubles and we can be whole again. It seldom works out that way, and what I have come to find is that once we achieve what we were aiming for, we find ourselves still wanting more. It never feels quite the way we expect, and without accepting the feeling of “content”, I truly don’t believe any of us can ever be satisfied.

So, what is it all about for you? I went through years of trauma and inability to move on, but once I was able to accept this feeling of content, I have barely thought about my past at all. Even more, when I do think about it, I don’t tremble anymore. I can keep myself calm, and it has become a beautiful thing for me. I can open up without breaking down, which was definitely a goal I never even really knew I had. I was also terrified of not being stuck in my mind anymore, but I didn’t know it was a trap back then. We have got to set ourselves free so that we can become who we were always meant to be.

It is time to be free of those thoughts and accept this new idea of what normal looks like. Be content and find your true peace.
