A Letter to My Future Self

Reflections on Dreams, Growth, and the Journey Ahead

By SibghaPublished about a year ago 3 min read

Greetings to my Dear Future Self,

I pray that by the time you read this letter, you are in good health. These days, I am at my desk enjoying the warmth of the sun through the glass. I can hear birds chirping outside and today is indeed a good day to talk to you. I question myself about your whereabouts and what you could be involved in. Are you happy? Is the life you are currently leading the one you have always considered to be ideal?

I am making this on a rainy evening. The clouds are dark, and drops of rain are knocking the glass. It is warm in here but I am full of questions. I can't help but think about the distant time. What will you be like? I want to be sure whether you have kept the promises we made to each other.

Do you recall when we were children? We had enough ideas. We wanted to go around the globe, learn other languages, and impact the world. Did you go to Paris? Do you see the Tower of Eiffel, just like we always did? Or maybe you are trekking in the Andes of Peru, enjoying the fresh oxygen and invigorated feeling. I do hope you have traveled to every part of this beautiful planet.

There’s no doubt about the fact that daily living involves a myriad of decisions, and I believe you have chosen wisely. Have you stayed true to your authentic self? I understand how one may get disoriented in the hustle and bustle of life. People will command you on how to act and how to behave. But I hope that you have listened to your inner self. I hope you have pursued your passions and not just followed the crowd.

In the first place, I would also probably agree with a lot of our friends. Have you been in touch with any of them? I hope you still find it amusing to make the silliest of jokes and engage in those talks till the sun rises again. Treasures are friends. They bring us up when we are low. I trust you’ve surrounded yourself with inspiring pylons. Just remember, it’s not about how many friends you got, but rather the depth of those friendships.

What about love? Is there anyone who makes your heart beat out of your chest? I trust you have enjoyed that beautiful thing called love. It is both terrifying and thrilling at the same time. I hope you have spent laughter, dreams, and even sadness with that special one. Love is the reason why life is beautiful and worth living.

However, it’s not always rainbows and sunshine. There will be bumps along the way. I hope that you have faced them with courage. I hope that you learned to appreciate both the good and the bad times. Do not forget, it is okay to flinch. It’s okay to be lost every so often. What matters is how you get back on your feet. Have you managed to find compassion in yourself? Oh, how I wish we had that nurture.

So, I think about your profession. Did you follow an obsession? I believe you jump out of bed every morning looking forward to going to work. It’s never too late to pursue one’s dreams. If you are not where you want to be, don’t be afraid to make a change. The world is too short to be trapped in a job that does not bring joy.

Writing this makes me Think about my young years and their effect on me concerning growth. I hope that you have as well continued growing and expanding yourself. Have you acquired new hobbies? Maybe, you have taken up learning a musical instrument or engaged in painting. Art is a wonderful important gift. It refreshes our souls.

Dear Future Me, I believe you have not forgotten to heed and regard the littler aspects of life. Such as, the fragrance of fresh brew in the morning, giggling and the joy of being in another’s arms. Life comprises of several instances, very small but still significant. Do not allow the ruthlessness or fast pace of life do that to you.

In the end, I hope it has not been the case that you have stopped being curious. Life is a journey and each day presents an opportunity to discover something new. Keep asking questions, and research everything. There are so many things that await your eye and brain.

I am looking forward to hearing from you. I do hope you write back soon. Until then, Remember to be nice, fearless and most importantly yourself.

All my love,

Your Past Self.
