The Ultimate Guide to Living Your Best Life in Retirement

How to design the perfect retirement for maximum happiness

By Val GarnerPublished about a year ago 4 min read

Retirement can be a scary yet wonderful season in life, where you can say goodbye to the daily grind of jobs and careers and hello to a new chapter. But how? We'll explore specific ways to create a happy and fulfilling retired lifestyle.

For many, the reality of retirement doesn't match our expectations, hopes, and dreams.

There may be unforeseen challenges to navigate. Probably so. Yet, there is still time to carve out and create your best life at this stage.

We will explore some strategies to retire happily, tailoring them to our unique situations.

It may involve making lifestyle changes or adopting a new mindset to find joy in our post-work years.

Rediscover the Art of Play

Retirement can be the perfect time to rediscover (or discover for the first time) the joy of play and leisure.

Consider taking an improv class, mastering new painting techniques, or hosting board game nights with friends.

Laugh freely and enjoy deeply the people around you.

During retirement, you might find the time to pursue a new interest or hobby you've always wanted to learn but never had the chance.

Make a list of these ideas and include everything. Let the list evolve for a week, adding new ideas as you think of them. Here is a resource I love called Craftsy, with a wealth of classes by pros, on just about every hobby you can think of, and many you maybe haven't considered before. It's worth the time to check out the site to see what they have to offer.

Revisit it and pay attention to which hobbies resonate with you now. Now might be the perfect moment to embrace and learn these new skills and interests.

Develop a Green Thumb

Retirement can be an excellent opportunity to try gardening, treating the soil as a blank canvas.

Planting flowers and herbs or starting a small vegetable garden can be incredibly rewarding and therapeutic. Growing your vegetables can also save you money.

Watching your efforts bloom and flourish can bring immense satisfaction and connect you more deeply with nature, enhancing your well-being during retirement.

It also provides some great exercise.

Take a Culinary Adventure

Retirement can offer the perfect time to explore the world's culinary delights.

Engage in cooking classes, experiment with new recipes or host themed dinner parties. Cooking is an art that tantalizes the senses and can increase the joy of retirement by providing a creative outlet.

Even if you can't travel or don't want to, discovering different international foods can at least take the senses there. Share it with a friend.

Become a Volunteer and Change the World

Giving back to the community can be a rich and profound way to happiness, especially in retirement.

With the free time afforded by retirement and possibly social security benefits, many opportunities exist to contribute meaningfully to society.

Whether through mentoring or volunteering with children in many ways, sharing your time and skills can foster a sense of fulfillment and purpose.

Sometimes, seniors wrestle with a loss of purpose. They still have so much to give the world and society around us, one person at a time.

Or start a letter project, where handwritten encouraging letters are sent to friends and loved ones, just because.

Accept Your Wanderlust

Embracing your adventurous spirit is healthy to do in retirement. Adventure can rejuvenate your retirement years, whether local jaunts or far-away travels.

Discover hidden gems and forge new friendships, even if it's just downtown locally.

Learn Something New Every Day

The quest for understanding and learning is a lifetime undertaking, and retirement offers the perfect opportunity to pursue education in areas you've always been interested in.

Learning keeps your mind active and stimulates your sense of wonder, whether you're learning a new language, taking online classes, or attending lectures.

It is a vital aspect of your retirement learning journey.

Build Relationships

Retirement is a time to strengthen your bonds with people and socialize, not merely spend time alone.

Organize events tailored to your interests, host frequent get-togethers, or join community groups.

Developing and maintaining relationships may provide you with a strong support network and bring a sense of warmth and camaraderie to your retirement.

Build Your Legacy

Consider creating a legacy that reflects your goals and areas of interest during retirement.

This may be creating art narrating your journey, publishing a memoir, or launching a blog. A guided journal I wrote with thoughtful prompts can be a perfect tool to help do this. You might even encourage other family members to do the same, so family stories can be preserved. You can find it here: Multi-generational Guided Diary for Grandparents: Journal your life legacy and family history for your descendants (there's also one for great-grandparents, and parents).

In addition to leaving a part of oneself for future generations, artistic expression allows you to find pleasure.

Treasure the Small Joys

Sometimes, the simplest things in life bring the most happiness. Cherish the little things that make every day joyful, such as enjoying a cup of tea on the porch, watching a beautiful sunset, or going on leisurely walks in your favorite places.

Develop an attitude of gratefulness and appreciation to enhance your retirement well-being.

Retirement starts an exciting new chapter in life, not just the conclusion of a career.

You may weave a fabric of contentment and pleasure out of this era by embracing fun, incorporating creativity into your everyday life, and being passionate about what you do.

Back again Val. Wow! Such wisdom, insight, thoughtfulness, encouragement and enthusiasm. I’m very happy to have ‘found you.’ I was wondering about your ‘ guided journal’ - there seems no active link. Pauline 🌸
