In 2014, life threw me a fast curve ball. One that took me to a dark place that I felt would never end. There were so many restless nights, anxiety and depression. I craved for someone to just hold me tight and never let me go.

As a Licensed Professional Counselor and someone diagnosed with anxiety and chronic insomnia, I know what it feels like to be constantly overwhelmed with thoughts that have no end and sleep deprivation. It’s not fun and you have no quality of life. For over 20 years, I’ve been a problem solver and helping people create passionate and quality lives despite living with a mental illness.

In 2020, I started a business that would allow people living with anxiety, depression, ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Fibromyalgia, Cancer, Diabetes, PTSD, etc, to experience pain relief and be able to sleep which will improve their overall quality of life.

It’s no secret that sleep is important. Sleep restores your body’s immune, nervous, skeletal, and muscular systems. Sleep helps heal your body, soul, and mind. Enough sleep is linked to increased cognitive ability and memory.

So, what can happen when people do not get enough sleep: Weight gain, Irritability, Inability to focus, Increased risk for mental and physical diseases, Decreased sex drive, and Lower job performance.

Practical steps matter and can bring much-needed relief, but holistic therapy addresses the underlying causes of insomnia. When people struggle to sleep, they can develop anxieties or false beliefs about themselves or sleep that can cause insomnia or increase it.

In 2005, when I had my first child, I experienced Postpartum Depression which turned into Postpartum Psychosis. Due to severe sleep deprivation, I began to experience auditory hallucinations. I was admitted into a psychiatric hospital for 5 days. When it was time for me to be discharged, my doctor prescribed sleeping pills (which I didn’t take) but he drilled in me the importance of sleep.

At Renew Blankets, we customize and handmade weighted blankets. Weighted blankets are heavy blankets used for therapeutic purposes, such as relieving anxiety and stress. Usually between five and 30 pounds, weighted blankets are filled with plastic pellets or glass beads. The added weight is designed to produce a calming effect when placed on the body.

Weighted blankets are proven to reduce anxiety and ease insomnia. But those aren’t the only benefit of our breathable blankets!

The interesting thing about weighted blankets is that they have been around and in use for years within the special needs community. This is a typical pattern for therapeutic products. They are used first for those who need them most, then they slowly become mainstream as people realize that they can benefit almost anyone.

The reason they have become mainstream is that people have started to realize that weighted blankets work for anxiety and typical sleep issues, and aren't just for children, but work great for adults.

Most adults, as well as children, could use a little extra help relaxing and improving sleep. In this day and age, where there seems to be a pill for everything, non-drug alternatives are gaining in popularity. Melatonin, vitamin supplements, essential oils, and even CBD oils are used in the general population to combat sleep issues, and weighted blankets are easy to try as well.

Weighted blankets act like a hug, using a technique called deep pressure stimulation (DPS) to make the user feel more secure. This is a deep touch pressure applied to the body — by hands, tools, or blankets — that can relax the nervous system.

What makes Renew Blankets so special is we hand make each and every blanket. We even offer thousands of designs so you look good while experiencing relief.

We meticulously use scissors to cut every piece of premium fabric. Every time we cut, our love pours into the fabric and create something so beautiful, knowing that we’re providing a service to someone who has been experiencing some level of discomfort. It brings us such joy to know that we’ve played a part.
