Introduction

This is a follow up to my post on Greg Davies’ “The Cleaner” Christmas Special which features an Autistic writer and actor and you can read about it below.

Some Definitions About Autism

This piece is about my observations so is anything but professional, but is about reaction when you are shown something.

What is a simple definition of autism?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability caused by differences in the brain. Some people with ASD have a known difference, such as a genetic condition. Other causes are not yet known. Scientists believe there are multiple causes of ASD that act together to change the most common ways people develop

What defines you as autistic?

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterised by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviours, speech and nonverbal communication.

What are the 3 areas of autism?

These disorders are characterised by three core deficits: impaired communication, impaired reciprocal social interaction and restricted, repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behaviours or interests.

What I Picked Up

Rightly or wrongly the program demonstrated (with a good deal of comedy) the difficulties faced by an autistic person. They need order and find it difficult to cope with anything that strays for the definitions that they see as rules. Robert Kendrick played by Ronnie Curran really brought home to me how an autistic can fit into normal life but is severely challenged when life deviates, and normal life deviates a lot. In a perfect world where nothing changed or went wrong then people with autism would find life far easier to deal with.

When I see examples of an autistic artists drawing something like a cityscape from memory I find that is so amazing, but there is a mental cost which makes the autistic person concentrate in a way that I could not even contemplate to produce that piece of art or reproduction. Stephen Wiltshire is an autistic artist who creates amazing artwork from memory. His website is here.

Autism is just a different mindset but we need to be aware of the difficulties that autism can cause that person issues.

I knwo people who have been diagnosed with autism, and often this is as well as other issues.

I have noticed things in my own behavious that may be considered on the autistic spectrum but most people will say that I am just attention seeking for saying this.

The irony is that I hate regimentation and being told what to do, but when I set things down I expect people to conform to that and start to get annoyed when people don't behave as I expect. When this happens I do have the ability to tell myself there is a good reason that they have not done what I expect and that does calm me done. A person with autism would find that incredibly difficult and that is demonstrated very well when Robert Kendrick in "The Cleaner" is asked to cross the Red Line that he does not have permission to cross.

I think we all may have some autistic parts of our make up but most of us can deal with them and live with them.

I have friends who are autistic and friends with family members who are autistic, and I have met many autistic people, usually artists in one form or another, who I never realised they were autistic until they told me, and asked me to tailor my interactions with them to help them out, which I was happy to do.

Conclusion.

I am not autistic, but I am trying to learn more about it and be there for autistic friends and aquantances who may ask me for something.

    Interesting article. Thanks for sharing.

Well done and an interesting insight. I do often wonder though who does the deciding about what is deemed the norm and what is a deviation. Considering so many great scientists/creators were/are on the spectrum. I don't know. Thinking out loud đŸ€

Nicely done! Exploring the possibility of being on the spectrum is definitely not attention seeking. It does take a lot of extra energy to do pretty much anything. I do however find being a walking jeopardy game a way to connect with people who otherwise would be turned away from me. There's a balance for sure. I don't make a great first impression 🙃.
