A big life change awaits!

By Alexis MundyPublished about a year ago 3 min read

When we think of retirement it is so easy to think that not having to get up in the morning is a luxury, and being able to do whatever you like is in essence heavenly. But though this may start off in what is called the honeymoon period this can be far from the case as we settle into a life not working. I have 10 tips that may help to guide you through the transition from work to retirement. From keeping fit and healthy to making the mental adjustment needed to thrive in what can be an exciting time of life!

1 Get your finances in order:

Organise your money so that you can work out what you have to live on. Gradually reducing your spending in the lead up to retirement will make it a lot easier to adjust. Track down any old pensions, claim your state pension and check what other benefits you can claim.

2 Wind down gently:

Ensure a smooth transition by retiring in stages. By easing off your workload over several years, you'll be able to get used to the idea of not working and fill your time in other ways.

3 Prepare for ups and downs:

There may be times when you feel lonely or a loss of clarity and focus, this is normal. If health or changes in your relationships temporarily alter your plans, accept this and get your back up plan in action. Think positively and share your worries with others.

4 Eat well:

Make sure you eat well and rather than snack all the time use the extra time you have to cook nutritious meals. This will not only help give you energy but also gives you something to focus on by coming up with new food ideas.

5 Develop a routine:

By keeping to a routine you will find it will help your sense of purpose. Do things like volunteering, exercise, hobbies and socialising with friends which will help your mental and physical health.

6 Exercise your mind:

Learning new things can help people to stay independent, so use your free time to challenge yourself mentally, whether it's learning a new language or doing something like sudoku or word games.

7 Keep physically active:

Aim to do at least 150 minutes of exercise a week even something like going for a walk everyday will help make a big difference and help keep your joints mobile.

8 Make a list:

Writing down your aims may help you focus on what you really want to achieve- like a 'to do' list. Work out what you can afford to do and schedule time to make it happen, so you experience a sense of accomplishment, as you would have done at work.

9 Seek social support:

For many people, work can form a big part of their social life and its common to feel at a bit of a loose end once you retire, Fill in the gaps by joining clubs and groups.

10 Go for a health check:

Prevention is better than cure as the old saying goes and now is the time to make sure that you are fully able to enjoy your life in retirement.

Retiring make no mistake is a big life change but with a positive attitude and ample preparation it can be one of the most exciting times of your life. You can travel, explore hobbies you never had time for and take up new ones. You have worked hard for many years. You deserve to live your best retirement life and have lots of fun. Good luck to you!
