Writing is a skill and us writers are well aware of what it takes to write every day. It's difficult to wake up every day challenging yourself to write a new piece of content every day that you're not even quite sure of how successful it'll end up being. Countless writers spend hours on their content just to upload it and get 2 views. The writing niche has always been competitive, while there are a handful of successful writers the other 90% of writers won't end up being so lucky.

No matter if you've been writing for years or you're an aspiring writer trying to leave your mark in the writing world, Medium serves as a great opportunity but you have to be patient. When reading stories around Medium, I know how long it takes to edit and curate your work. You have to focus on which publication to send it to hoping that you'll even be accepted, in charge of providing backlinks and spending time on grueling research that's just flat out boring sometimes.

I want you to set a goal for yourself: Write one article every day

And I don't mean just writing out an article on Google Docs or in your notebook. Edit, fix the grammar, and make sure it's perfect before you're done. While you may think it's easy at first it begins to get difficult when your schedule gets busy out of nowhere. The first time I tried to challenge myself of writing every day I ended up failing by day 4 but I've currently been hard at work writing every day for the 30 day challenge I'm participating in this month.

"Talent is cheaper than table salt. What separates the talented individual from the successful one is a lot of hard work."

~ Steven King

You can't be a good writer if you don't love to write. When I was younger, I loved writing comic books and coming up with new ideas for video games. It gave me a break and allowed me to use my creative mind for good.

Here's what you need to consider in order to write an article and make it perfect:

  • Brainstorm
  • Do Your Research
  • Write a draft
  • Edit
  • Rewrite the fully edited draft and publish it
  • Brainstorm

Brainstorming takes a whole different approach than the writing part. Brainstorming requires a creative mind to come up with ideas to entertain an audience. Writers are full of creativity in their souls making each and every writer different in their own ways no matter the topics talked about because they always have their own view of things that are opposite of one another. You can be terrible at talking about the subject but when you brainstorm it's important to think about what personally interests you.

I've come up with countless articles I was previously interested in and passionate about and when researching, I discovered so much information that I previously hadn't known before while I was writing.

The hard part about brainstorming (at least for me) is that there's either so much to think about that you can't come up with the best one, or you have no ideas whatsoever. While brainstorming, there are sure to be some good ideas you think of.

Write the ones that you're confident in down so you don't forget and come back to them when you begin to write.

Research

Researching the topic you want to talk about sounds so easy but it can be difficult sometimes. I tell myself that I'm going to spend 30 minutes researching and when that time comes I'm deep into research about the different theories of Michael Jackson. When you have your mind primarily set on your research make sure that there are no distractions around you. Losing focus on what you're doing only ends up with you wasting your own time.

Using Google, browse the posts on the topic, and write the most important ones down. Once you have everything down, research again and look over your facts to make sure your information is correct.

Write a draft

All writers are different in how they work and the style they like to use for their writing. Some take 5 minutes to write a 500-word article and then it could take some an hour to write a 1000-word piece. Rough drafts aren't going to be your final piece of work, make an outline before you do any sort of writing and know what you're going to write for your intro, body, and conclusion.

Edit your work

A highly recommended Chrome extension that fixes your spelling and grammar, is Grammarly. I use that to fix all of my mistakes so I don't have to when I'm in the process of writing my draft. You can also give other editors like SmartEdit and Hemingway Editor a try.

Whether you have your own blog or writing for Medium or Vocal Media always think of a picture to add that symbolizes the article. I like to use ethics and bring emotion to appeal to the audience when choosing my pictures to use. Medium and Vocal Media let you add a picture giving credit to the original person with their Unsplash feature.

Self-editing can be even more punishing than writing the actual article. Fully editing an article now is more than just editing the story. You also have to optimize your article for SEO and that's a much longer process. You have to read every single word to edit and there's no skimming through this one. To be good at editing will require patience and a whole lot of discipline.

Rewrite and publish

Think of publications to send it to if you're using Medium, write down 10 of the best ones that you think will:

  1. Increase viewership
  2. Convert to reads
  3. Be accepted

Write down or copy and paste your fully edited article and publish it. A lot of beginning writers get intimidated and anxious about if their work will be criticized by other writers or not, we are all in one community no matter how big or how small the writer is so don't worry, and if you get a response containing constructive criticism, let it stick with you so you can learn from it.

Takeaway

When writing a brand new story every day you are sure to have some benefits to counter the negatives. You'll notice how smart you'll get when writing more stories and learning new vocabulary words that you could use. Writing completely soothes the mind once you're in your element, it enhances your self-awareness, anxiety, and stress especially when it comes to expressive writing.

It's time to stop making excuses. Start by setting a word count goal like 1000 words and go from there. Treat writing like it's your job because it definitely has a chance to be if you keep putting in the effort of writing content every day. You'll soon develop muscle memory and you'll feel like you're writing faster than you ever have. It's best not to constantly check what your word count is while writing because that will begin to depress you if the word count is less than you thought it would be.

Thank you for reading and remember to keep writing no matter what.
