Singers sue comedian and became the joke
A field trip to court
Hello, hello
Today I'm going to talk to you about this case that happened in Portugal. It has became one of the most dumb cases and frankly I agree. So to make you laugh let's start.
The "victims"
The singers that are suing are a duo called Anjos (translation Angels) they are a bit know here, they have some songs that are know, especially a Christmas song. But it's not like they are a staple of the portuguese music.
In 2020 on the 25 of April, Portugal's Independence Day, the duo was invited to sing the national anthem. And they flunked it. I remember it clearly because I also was invited to sing the national anthem in my city with some colleagues and they showed me the video while laughing. You can check out the video here. If you didn't watch the video they basically weren't in harmony, added runs, and sounded bad all around. It was the talk of the town for quite some time with an unanimous opinion that it wasn't a good performance.
The "villain"
Joana Marques is a comedian and host of Extremamente desagradável (translation: Very unpleasant) a comedy podcast, one of the most, if not the most viewed podcast in Portugal. I also listen to the podcast and listened to the episode where Joana comments about Anjos singing the national anthem and being received with criticism. From what I recall it was simple jokes like the same ones I did with my friends in the coffe shop after seing the video.
What happened next
Then, three years afters being invited to sing the national anthem and the episode that Joana did about them they decided to sue her. They asked for a compensation in the amount of 1 million euros. They claim that the audio that Joana showed in her podcast was altered to make them sound bad (spoiler, it wasn't) and that they are asking that amount because of the jobs that they could have booked but didn't. The podcast being the reason for the lack of jobs that they didn't booked.
Currently there is no decision made in court, but the internet keeps making fun of Anjos for the amount that they want, and the reasons that they listed for asking that amount.
Joana has made some jokes about the situation, like "I'm going to talk about this singer, let's hope he doesn't take me to court too" or about how hot is the courtroom
Anjos also went on some talk shows to explain their side and to sing again to show the country that they are good singers. The opinion of the public didn't change according to some coments that I have seen.
My opinion
Some are saying that this shows that even humour needs boundaries. I think that this show that an ego can get really inflated. The whole vibe of the podcast is being unpleasant yes, but they only talk about what is being shown. For example, one of the episodes was about this lady that claimed that she could look at you and see all your diseases, in the podcast they showed the times where you could see she was a total con artist. I do believe that humour needs boundaries but one of the reasons why I like to listen to Extremamente desagradável is because they don't make jokes just because they need a punching bag. They show when the person they are talking about is being hypocritical, or saying stuff that doesn't make sense.
And that's all folks, what are your thoughts on the matter? Do you know similar cases?
