Respect Your Wife
A Village Tale of Work, Wits, and Wives

Respect your wife
An old couple lived in a village. One day, while the old man was clearing the forest to sow crops, an injured deer started running through the middle of his field. It had been shot by a hunter. When the deer started passing close to him, the old man swiftly hit it on the head with his spade. The deer fell down right there. The old man immediately hid the dead deer in the bushes. The hunter came to the old man looking for the deer and asked, Grandpa, did you see an injured deer
The old man replied like a deaf person to engage him in conversation The boundaries of my field Well, the east boundary is here and the west boundary is there
The hunter said No, I am not asking about the boundary of the field, I am asking about an injured deer.
The old man replied I know what you mean, whether the crop will be good this time or not. How can I say this
No, I am not asking about the crop but about the injured deer the hunter said irritably.
The old man said I cannot wait any longer. It is dark and I am hungry too. I am going home.
Saying this, he started towards home. The hunter started muttering to himself What a fool I am dealing with. Because of the old man, I lost the prey that I had got. He also went his way.
While having dinner at night, the old man said to his wife Tomorrow morning, you give me breakfast early. I have killed a deer and hidden it in the forest. In the morning, I have to go and cut it into pieces and bring it home.
His wife gave him breakfast early in the morning and sent him to work. The old man went to the field. He cut the body of the dead deer into many pieces. When the whole body was turned into pieces, he wanted to divide the pieces of meat into two parts in equal proportion in the name of his wife and him. First he started calculating his share. He started counting each piece on the basis of his daily work and separating his share – This is for washing the face in the morning, this is for chewing tobacco, this is for driving the cattle to the fields, this piece is for ploughing the field… In this way he separated his share of meat on the basis of his daily work. Then he calculated his old wifes share – This is for washing the face in the morning, this is for chewing tobacco, this is for spinning cotton, this is for threshing cotton, this is for weaving cloth, this is for cooking food, this is for drawing water from the well….
On counting, he found that his wifes share was much more than his. He became angry. He could not believe that how could a womans share be bigger than a mans He put the pieces of meat together again and started dividing them afresh. This time he separated his share based on his daily chores and then his wifes. This time his share became bigger than his wifes. He was not satisfied. He again mixed all the meat together. Every time one part would be more and one less. Sometimes his share would be heavier and sometimes his wifes. He divided it again and again, but even once the calculations did not match. The day passed in the process of dividing the shares. It became evening.
When the husband did not return home even after daybreak, the wife became furious. She went out in search of him with a pestle. She found him sitting in the middle of a heap of deer meat in the field. The meat had become dirty due to repeated separation and mixing. The old woman secretly used a pestle to crush the meat. The wife hit the husband on his back. The old man screamed and said, A snake has bitten me. Saying this, he ran away from there. The wife immediately picked up some pieces of meat, tied them in a cloth and headed towards home. She cooked the same meat for dinner. When the husband sat down to eat, he saw the meat and asked the wife, Where did the meat come from
The wife said, You were getting late in coming, so I killed a chicken and cooked it. If I would have waited for you to divide the food, I would not have cooked dinner. The wife cleverly got her work done. The old man started thinking, I should include the work of killing chickens in his share. But if I do so, his share will increase. What should I do But it is true that a womans work is much more than that of a man. She takes a quick decision and finds a way out even in trouble. This part of hers should also be counted.
From that day onwards, the husband accepted that the wife has to work much more than him to run the family. That is why she deserves respect.
On the other hand, the old woman was thinking, the old man will remain as a fool as ever. He will never gain wisdom.
