What does it mean to be a prisoner of your own mind?
It means that you have full control on what you think about but then you don’t. Humans think a lot and it may cause anxiety and different emotions to appear. There may have been situations that has happened in the past that’ll keep playing over and over in your head that you may not want to think about, but it has affected you in such a strong way that you still can’t get over it. It’s normal to overthink but you have to learn how to help yourself as well. What I’m trying to say is, try to keep your mind positive. Whatever it is that is bothering you or has bothered you in the past, stay away from it.
“ Your mind is your prison when you focus on your fear.” – Tim Fargo
When a person is going through depression they are overwhelmed with so many emotions and don’t always know how to deal with it the right way. They think about things that puts them down even more and the sad truth is, they’ll never know or understand their worth, meaning, some of the things that are causing it are stuff that aren’t even worth being the reason for it. Their so use to being a prisoner of their own mind that instead of solving out ways to help themselves get better mentally, they build and build nothing but more fear and cause more pain to themselves.
What can cause you to be a prisoner of your own mind?
Relationships, past relationships, lost of a loved one, friendship breakups, divorce, health issues, drugs, school, bad habits, money, not feeling good enough, something you’ve watched, thoughts about your future and even thoughts about your past. We all go through obstacles. Obstacles are a part of life. Not everyone knows how to handle these situations because of either how they were raised or because they’ve never gone through the situation before. Not everyone thinks the same, some are smarter about the choices they make but that doesn’t make the ones who don’t know what to do any less smarter. Not everyone has help and not everyone has the same opportunities.
How can you free your mind?
Ways you can free your mind is by letting go of the past. Get rid of anything and everything that puts you down & won’t let you grow as a person. Stop thinking negative. We humans are really good at thinking about the bad outcomes instead of the good ones. Also, staying away from negative people. Therapy can help as well. Another one is stop feeling guilty. Not everything is your fault and their might have been times where something has happened that you may have not had any control in and it turned out bad so you start thinking about the “what ifs” and/or the “I should’ve ....” & ect. Last but not least, forgiving others and forgiving yourself. If you don’t learn how to forgive you won’t make peace with the pain. By forgiving someone else, you’re doing yourself the favor by letting go of bitterness. Forgiveness is the start of the healing process and it doesn’t mean you have to be the same way you were with that person before. Forgive them but know better. A lot of people say “ forgive but never forget “, I say, forgive meaning, forget about what happened. How can you let go of your past if you don’t help yourself forget about it. Yes be smarter about your decisions and who you decide to give your time to but in my personal opinion, in order to forgive someone and yourself, you have to forget about whatever it is or was that caused or is causing the pain.
What helps me free my mind is writing. I think a lot about everything. I think about my future, memories from my childhood, my family, what do people do when their home alone, weird stuff like why can pigeons fly and chickens who are considered a “ bird “ as well can’t fly. I think about death, where do you go after death, if doctors really have a cure for cancer or they don’t, how it feels being in space, what are my future friends going to be like, who am I going to meet next, having a family, where will I be in 10 years and what will I be doing, why can that person understand and do so well in math and I can’t, thoughts about what do people really think about me & ect. I could go on and on but I think we’ve all gone through these type of thoughts and we’ll never know the answer to most of them but that’s alright. Life is full of mysteries and we just have to find our way to survive.
