How would you rate Nile's work 'The Return of Yuro'?
Literature
01 Not a problem of scarcity, but a problem of inequality
In his novel "The Return of the Jade Lang", the writer Nile tells this bizarre, twisted and tangled story of feud.
The powerful Jin family has two sons from the same father.
The elder son, Kim Hyo-kun, and the younger son, Kim Yulang.
The two brothers are almost twenty years apart. The older brother is calm and capable, while the younger one is a playboy.
Even so, his father favoured the younger son, leaving most of the family fortune to Yulang and giving the eldest son several factories that were on the verge of closing down and owed a lot of bad debts.
Jin Yulang became a wealthy young man with a lot of money, while Jin Xiu Kun, who had been working with his son for years, became a poor man in debt.
By chance, Jin Yulang is kidnapped by bandits, who demand 100,000 foreign dollars from the Jin family before they will let him go.
He tried to raise money to rescue his brother, but his confidant broke his heart's demons by saying, "If he dies, all the money in his name will be yours."
When the unfathomable selfishness and greed in human nature is ignited, a small flame immediately becomes a prairie fire.
Jin Hao Kun intended to take the opportunity to eliminate Jin Yulang in the process of fighting the bandits, so it was only natural that all the property in his brother's name would become his.
It can be said that Kim Hyo-kun had no intention of plotting against his siblings, but he was not treated fairly under his father's favouritism.
He was more mature and stable than his younger brother and was better suited to be the head of the family and to take care of his father's legacy and property, instead of taking over a few ramshackle factories, tearing down the east wall and mending the west wall, and being busy and frazzled.
His younger brother, who inherited a rich inheritance thanks to his father's love, idles away his days, squanders his money and lives a life of luxury and idleness.
Kim Hyo-kwan is living a life of poverty with the aura of a young lord, and when he looks at the pink-faced jade boy on the loose, it is strange that his heart is not out of balance.
There is one thing in human nature that should not be overlooked, and that is "not to worry about the scarcity but to worry about the inequality".
I can have less, but I can't be unfair.
It is especially important not to be unequal between parents in a family.
As the old saying goes, parents should be fair in all matters.
Otherwise, there will be discord in the family, unrest in the people, and in serious cases, the family will not prosper.
02 The person who stabs you in the back is often your friend
One of the key characters in "The Return of Yulang" is Congo Wu, a confidant of Kim Hyo-kwan.
He is an alumnus of Kim Hyo-kwan's and a close friend.
He was the one who helped him with his plan to get rid of Jin Yulang.
At first he stood to help Kim Hyo-kun get his property, led the troops to fight the bandits, and then took the opportunity to get rid of Kim Yulang.
It may seem that this series of actions is him fighting for Kim Hyo-kun and trying to help his good brother out.
In fact, Congo Wu is an uncompromising villain.
He wants $200,000 for his help.
Not only that, he is also in love with Jin Xiu Kun's wife.
The two of them secretly cheated on each other in Jin Xiu Kun's house while he was not at home.
This was a good friend who, in the name of righteousness, behaved in a nasty manner.
He was jealous of the Jin family's wealth, he coveted his brother's wife, and for this reason he betrayed his friend and did something unethical and evil.
This is human nature.
When you are well off, the people who see you least are not strangers, but the people closest to you.
There are no eternal friends, only eternal interests.
An old saying once said that for the sake of a brother, one can go up to the mountain of knives, go down to the sea of fire and stick a knife in both ribs.
It was also said that a friend's wife should not be bullied.
But in the case of Congolese Wu, it became "for personal gain, everything can be thrown away".
In the real world, many friends go their separate ways because of their interests.
When a friend asks you for money, the friendship boat starts to rock.
If you lend money, you may not get it back, and you will hold a grudge against the friend who doesn't pay you back, and the friendship may never return.
If you don't lend the money, you may lose the friend, and the friend will remember you for not saving him or her, and the friendship will die instantly.
Friendship is not easy to maintain.
In addition to similar interests, it is more a matter of character.
There are some friends who can share the hardship, but not the wealth.
When you are poor, your friends will stay away from you, when you are rich, not many people around you are sincere.
When you have a good mix, behind your back to look at you, jealous of you eye you, or even to stab, is often the one with you call brother, dinner and drink good friends.
03 One thought becomes a Buddha, one thought becomes a devil
In "The Return of Yulang", the book is titled "The Return of Yulang" by Nile. The simple-minded Jin Yulang no longer exists from the moment he learns that his brother, Jin Xiu Kun, is trying to get himself killed under the guise of rescuing him.
Yulang will never return.
He became an ally with the bandit Duan siblings, who had kidnapped him.
He returned to the Jin family alive and began the road to revenge.
In person he is a gentle, harmless gent, in person his revenge is being sought slowly.
He offers $200,000 to Duan Renlong and Duan Renfeng to protect him back to the Jin family. Passing by his uncle's house, fearing that his uncle, who had been asking for money in the past, would be too greedy and continue to knock the money out of him, Jin Yulang burns his uncle and his mansion to the ground with a huge fire.
When he sees that his fiancée Ao Xue is with his elder brother to rescue him, Jin Yulang concludes that Ao Xue is not a good person either and is having an affair with his brother, he pretends to marry Ao Xue and then humiliates her in every way.
Jin Yulang's path to blackness escalates rapidly.
He sent Kim Hyo-kun to prison and became the head of the Kim family.
He liked Duan Renfeng and wanted to marry her. When his great-uncle Duan Renlong strongly objected, Jin Yulang turned on Duan Renlong and killed him.
Even though Duan Renfeng is pregnant, he still wants to kill Duan Renlong.
After realising Jin Yulang's malice, Duan Renfeng took away Jin Yulang's fortune and fled from him.
Having fallen on hard times, Jin Yulang, with the support of his classmate Lu Jian'er, began to walk in the jungle. Under pressure, he married Lu Jian'er's sister, Lu Shuyuan.
After Lu Jian'er died in battle, Jin Yulang took away all of Lu Shuyuan's possessions and burned her to death in a fire.
One thought becomes Buddha, one thought becomes devil.
In the end, Jin Yulang lived as a deeply sinful outlaw.
From the day he came back from the dead, he decided to take his revenge, but he took a path of no return.
He became extreme, cruel and indifferent, without the slightest mercy or gratitude towards his pillow, his great benefactor, his own brother and sister.
Hatred blackens him and he falls into an abyss from which it is difficult to extricate himself.
04 Being kind-hearted is a discipline
Nile is a gentle woman of the 80s with an old-fashioned and spirited writing style.
The Heartless Master is her book.
Her novel, The Return of Yulang, has a tightly wound plot and clean writing that you can't stop reading.
Don't feel free to guess how the story will end, as the reversal is too thrilling.
Someone once said of Nile, "She writes not about characters, but about human nature."
Indeed.
In Jin Yulang's case, we can feel the complexity and variability of human nature and will cherish the goodness of people even more.
Forgiveness, understanding, kindness, loyalty, gratitude, generosity - if Jin Yulang possesses one or more of these, he will not fall into the abyss.
The story can be read in one night, but the practice of returning to oneself is a lifelong affair.
Let us always be mindful of goodness and keep the true beauty of human nature, both in its bottom line and in its tolerance.
