The Island Blind Date
What's the worst that could happen?
“So, what do you think? Should I pick blond or brunette?”
Meow.
“I knew you’d say that!” exclaimed Killian as he clicked ‘blond’ in the drop-down list.
Killian spent almost an hour on this site, choosing the criteria for his blind date. Apart from her hair, he was able to choose her age, eye colour, nationality and many more.
He often stopped to ask his cat, Ava, for her opinion and she would meow in response.
Once he submitted the details for his blind date, he was asked to choose the following from the drop-down list:
Destination: Fiji
Resort: Pisces Beach Resort
Date: 28/02/2023
Time: 12 p.m.
Meal: Traditional Fijian Food
Menu: Special
Upon submitting his choices, he was prompted to make payment for everything. He entered all the details of his credit card and the payment was successful.

Killian left for Fiji a day before he was supposed to meet his blind date. He brought Ava along as the resort he would be staying at allowed pets.
He checked in at noon at the resort. He got the key card and went up to his room. He let Ava out of her pet carrier.
The view from his room was breathtaking. It was way more beautiful than the photos on their website.
Killian decided to have a short nap as he was jetlagged. He woke up several hours later and headed down for dinner.
After dinner and a few drinks (he was careful not to drink too much as he didn’t want to risk a hangover during his blind date the next day), he was back in his room.
He was flipping through the available TV channels while stroking Ava’s soft fur as she was lying on his lap. None of the programs caught his fancy so he decided to hit the sack instead.

Killian started to get ready for his blind date at a quarter to noon. He put on his best shirt, paired it with jeans, brushed his hair and sprayed on some cologne.
At five to noon, Killian made his way down to the resort restaurant. He showed the host his reservation and was shown his table.
As he sat, a waiter placed two dishes in front of him. Killian was beyond impressed looking at those mouth-watering dishes. The waiter then proceeded to name those dishes to Killian.
“Good day to you, sir. I understand that you have chosen the Special Menu for the traditional Fijian food, am I correct sir?”
“Yes I did”, Killian nodded politely.
“Wonderful sir. Now sir, if you don’t mind, I would like to walk you through these foods before I let you enjoy them. The first dish is Kokoda, which is a form of Fijian Ceviche that is served with lemon juice, coconut milk, tomatoes, chillies and seawater.
The second dish is Palusami, which is meat wrapped with taro leaves, thick coconut cream and onions. This is cooked using a traditional Fijian method called Lovo, where the wrapped ingredients are placed on hot rocks, which will then be buried and cooked for several hours”, the waiter explained with high expertise.

“That’s really fascinating!” said Killian.
“I do hope you enjoy them, sir. Both of these dishes have been adhered to your request for the Special Menu”, the waiter said.
“Thank you so much for your excellent service, Mr.Tawake!” said Killian eyeing the waiter’s name tag.
“Enjoy your meal, sir”, said the waiter as he handed Killian a card and left. On the card were two words. Grace Hackelson.
“Hello, Grace! It’s so nice to eat you!”

Is it bad that I was worried something would happen to Killian only because I didn't want Ava to be all alone in a strange place? I'm glad he was okay for her sake! As for Grace, I hope she didn't bring any pets! I wonder what it was like on her end: if she thought she was signing up for an innocuous dinner with someone or if she willingly allowed herself to be killed and eaten like Bernd Brandes. Fantastic work as always, Dharr!
🤍 through every word… I read… ~ being fully aware of the subtitle… ♥️ you still did enough to get us to relax… metaphorically, on the edge of a cliff ~ meanwhile the answers were inside the food. Upon zooming in… that really doesn’t look right lol. But boy was that one hell of a twist 👏🏽👌🏽♥️🤗

The ending was unexpecting and well done on the story
I was pleasantly surprised when I realized that he wasn't actually paying for a date with a woman. The recopies actually made me hungry, My Morbid Friend. I wouldn't eat a person, though. You never know where they have been. LOL.

A good story but it could use a little more exposition in order to make the ending twist punch better. Unfortunately, the "Quest for Eyes" format Vocal uses discourages the finer details needed in order to turn stories into good writing. Having said that, you definitely have what it takes. I hope you keep writing.
