Reflecting on Love, Life, and Loss. Top Story - June 2023. Content Warning.
I don’t think I ever fully conceptualised the reality of my grandparents’ mortality until my grandmother died. Her body broke down, leaving her mind intact. I cannot think of a worse fate. Motor Neurone Disease is a vicious, cruel beast that takes and takes and takes. My grandmother went from a vibrant energetic woman who loved drinking champagne and cloudy apple juice and sitting in tide pools to someone who could do little more than grunt. After my cousin died, she couldn’t go on, and I lost her at the end of 2021.

Last year it was arson. The year before, a phony health inspector. This year it's our turn. We infiltrate the tasting with no issues - a hundred and one people all dressed to the nines; the Howdens won't notice a couple of extra staff. Their uniforms are cheap polyester, itchy and hot. I tug at my tie.

I don’t remember how I stumbled onto the cast recording of Sang de Vie Productions’ Dracula concept album. I can’t even remember how many years ago it was now – at least two, possibly more. But with it’s striking red album cover featuring a silhouette of Dracula, it’s hard to miss.

Parched Nomads
