Stan's Reality-Altered
Stan, a 55-year-old traveling sales agent, is a Bostonian through and through. The Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics, and Bruins are the only teams worth rooting for. In Stan’s world, change can never be a good thing. His third-floor walkup apartment is the same one he and a fellow student originally rented while attending Suffolk University 35 years ago. The roommate moved on; Stan never did. Why leave a place that feels as comfortable to him as an old pair of jeans?

Tragedy of Love
It was at times a simple perplexing pattern, one which I would find myself repeating endlessly as I traversed my small decaying home. As I came home to rest after a long day of embroiled ambitions and sought nothing but the reprieve of sleep I would notice a faint glimmer of light coming across the floor to my left. It was peculiar, an anomaly for I knew that there was no door, nor window there for it to possibly be originating from and yet each day I stopped and examined it in minute detail. From the rotten mold spreading slowly across the walls up towards the blank wall dotted with nothing more than aged stains. Then the strangest occurrence would happen just as I was preparing to move away and push past the pulsing in my head and lie down to rest. I would blink my weary eyes and then before me a new corridor would appear. This corridor was pristine and free from all the malformations the rest of my house possesses. Yet there was an eerie contrast in the fact that it was dark like an abyss except for that same streak of light coming out from the gap at the bottom of that door. Every day without fail I would slowly approach with the lightest of footsteps, feeling the hairs on the back of my neck rise and my arms rapidly breakout into goosebumps. Upon reaching that malefic door I would tentatively reach out to grasp the doorknob and twist to find the same conclusion. It was locked and no matter how I fumbled about it that fate would not change. Soon I would lose hope and once again turn back to normalcy and ready myself once more to rest, but as I walk away a low groan is soon followed by tearful bellows low in noise, but seizing of the heart is the true sorrow it contains. Yet as soon as it appeared I had stepped back into my warped hallway and it had disappeared. On one fateful day after weeks of this repeated cycle when that door appeared there was something different about it for this time it had been left slightly ajar. My heart fluttered with uncertainty for the bizarre occurrence taking place now after weeks of drudgery in my daily life awaiting a chance at this door for any possible change. As I approached I soon noticed that the light was changing, morphing as though there was movement in the room which was altering the way in which that glow was being projected. I could only consider that it was the person to whom that voice belonged, someone in such deep distress that it captivated me in the pursuit of meeting them. However now that I stand in front of the door I pause unmoving, frozen on that landing lacking the courage to reach out and enter, but also too stubborn in my persistence to simply back away and return to the mundane boredom of everyday life. It is in the middle of this discordance that I hear a voice quietly beckon and ask me to enter. As I comprehend the utterance I just heard I begin to now nervously stumble into the room and am met now with a contrast to the darkness of that hallway and now need to wipe my eyes from a small yet blinding lamp. When I do I am greeted by a vision of a gloomy disheveled room which has a mess which only the owner could call organized. The room smells of a subtle fragrance which plays on the nose curiously not being sweet while equally not being wretched. I am stirred from these idle trivialities upon taking full notice of a figure lying down on a bed, one who I can only assume is the origin of the recurring weeping that I had been pursuing. I approach the figure and soon notice that it is a girl similar to me in age, and yet owning a primordial attribute to her being that only seeks to captivate me further. I struggle to register any possible words that I could say which could encapsulate the thoughts and feelings which stir chaotically in my head. Putting a pause to all my thoughts she slowly reaches a hand up to my lips so as if to shush me so as to study me much the same as I do currently to her. Suddenly she gets up to meet my eyes and it is then I notice a wetness around her eyes, but her gaze itself seems almost content. She is the first to break the silence with a voice that sounds somber. She asks if I would join her and reside in this room and make it possible for it to reach out and encapsulate my entire home with her by my side. I struggled to understand the full severity of what she was requesting, yet I could hear the plea in her voice and feel the discontent she held for being trapped in this small room removed from the rest of the world. The only reply I thought was correct was for me to say yes, for my worth was next to nothing to the rest of the world, so for even one person to value me and what I could offer was of such significance I could not simply ignore it. Hearing my reply of affirmation she then proceeded to give me the most forlorn smile and wrap her arms around me in a coveted embrace. I then heard her whisper quietly into my ear "For us to be together you must become the same type of being as I." she then wrapped her hands around my throat and took the final thing world had left me and thus the final thing I heard that day were the words ”Rise the next day and together we shall remain for eternity, fail and once again alone I shall stay." So she killed me with the kindest of eyes and banished me from any conventional death and and gave me hope for a life we both knew was unlikely to come. In my passing I heard her scream and rage against the very world which had left her cursed this way.

The Faceless Phantom
I was eleven in the summer of 2001 when my family moved into our grandparent’s house, nestled in the heart of North Georgia’s Blue Ridge mountains. The sultry southern heat and thick humidity were a stark contrast to the mild summers I had grown accustomed to while living in Southeast Alaska. After retiring from her Coast Guard career, mom offered to help Granny care for Grandpa, who was in the final stages of advanced Parkinson’s disease. My nine-year-old sister Nikki and I spent our idle mornings pushing one another on the tire swing our uncle had strung up in the humungous weeping willow tree planted in the front yard. In the afternoons, we raced Granny’s golfcart around the lush lawn until our mom called us inside for dinner. It was an idyllic and carefree existence, until we encountered Mrs. Oglethorpe.

When Autumn Came
Ghosts that live in the basement are rarely ever frightening. It’s the ones in the attic that you should really fear. I’ve known this all my life, as I lived in a home for a year that had a preference towards small crawl spaces hanging just above one’s bed. I woke in the midnight hours many nights as a child, only to see a pair of eyes hanging above me, watching me as I watched them. I would pull the covers up over my head and pray that the skittering noises would eventually stop. They always did.

Bloody Melodies
Bloody Melodies Written by Asia Florez I walked through the sea of people, not quite knowing where I would end up. I felt my senses heighten as adrenaline rushed through my veins. I could sense a magnetic pull towards my target of exaltation. The dark spiritual pressure was heavy and ever increasing as the bass of the music pumped up the crowd like cocaine through the air waves. Sweat formed above my brows and left a damp trail down my face. Anticipation began to fill my body. I knew he was here somewhere, watching me search for him. I could feel it. I tried to hide my presence when I entered the stadium but it's hard to hide the bloodlust when it's this strong. I may work for the light, but I enjoyed getting to tear apart the evils of this world. I continued my journey with confidence in every step. I could feel myself getting closer to where the darkness was oozing. The MC of the concert conducted the vibes and set the pace for this wicked energy harvest without even truly knowing what they were doing. “We don't play , and if you got somethin ill to say, we won't hesitate to fill this place with aces and spades !” how ironic those lyrics were to me. Im about to play my best hand and dig this mother fucker into a grave. I know it was risky coming into this mission solo.. But this is personal and there was no way I was going to let this opportunity go. My mother always said I was bold.. But I'm not sure how she would feel about this move. I stopped near the edge of the crowd. It figures he'd want an easy escape in case things went sideways for him. I know this visit wasn't unexpected. Revenge could be as sweet as a buttercream cake and I was ready to have a taste. I decided to stop and take a moment to gather my energy together to open my third eye further so I could scan the crowd for his energy. I drew in a deep breath and allowed my breathing to calm. “As steady as a stream.. As powerful as a river.” my mothers mantra echoed through my mind as I anchored myself and focused. A good huntress never allows the bloodlust to take control of her, she controls it. My heart steadied but the beat was pounding hard in my left breast, almost as hard as the music. I scaled the flock of concert goers, carefully reading the energetic flow of everyone. I could feel myself closing in on my prey. The air began to change. I could feel his shift in energy as anxiety from being uncovered began to creep over his spread out aura. “The shadows can't hide you forever …” I uttered to myself. “No, I suppose they can't my darling..” his voice boomed over the rhythmic melodies as deep and seductive as ever before. I was startled.. But not shocked. He had always had a way of moving as smooth and calculated as a panther on the prowl, a silhouette blending in amongst shadows. My crooked smile formed by habit. I missed hearing that voice. What a bittersweet moment this was. I turned around and swung my fist toward his heart but he caught my hand before I could land a blow. He chuckled playfully “I see you still aren't taking your training seriously.” He was trying to throw me off by arousing my anger. “I see you still aren't taking ME seriously.” The words left my mouth from the very bottom of my belly, the belly of a beast that had grown hungry from being deprived of the one thing in this life she desired the most. I threw up a high kick aimed for his throat. I hit his shoulder instead. It felt as if I had kicked a boulder. I winced a bit but I didn't give him the satisfaction of seeing my pain. “Your body is as hard as marble, just like your heart.” I spat. “Shit….” I thought to myself. He's starting to get to me, and I think he knows it. “I'll take that as a compliment,” he laughed. He grabbed my arm and spun me around like a vinyl on a record player with my back pressed against him. “You know, you're the only one in that place. I'm glad I spared. Even after the possession there's still a part of me that has a soft spot for you Nubia.” I felt my face begin to burn with fury, my head becoming consumed with rage. This isn't fair, the universe played such a cruel joke that I still didn't quite understand. “I know you know I still feel for you after all that you have done Damien. But I am absolutely prepared to take you out for what you have become. I won't allow you to keep infecting this earth with more parasites like you.'' Every word I said felt like acid dripping from my tongue. I know I was supposed to keep my cool but seeing Damien face to face was different than me playing this moment out in my head. I thought I was prepared but I was flooded with so many emotions all at once, one of them including confusion because I began to realize I may have to call my own bluff. I knew deep down inside he still had a piece of him that was holding onto his humanity. I knew because demons do not feel love yet he had it in him to spare me when he could have ripped me apart at my weakest moment. But still that wasn't enough for me to let him continue on with his power trip. I removed my sai from its hiding place on my hip beneath my jacket and impaled his right leg. The crowd around us were too hypnotized to notice our dance. Here pretty soon the blood moon would reach its peak and allow the portal to hell to open. I couldn't allow anymore demons to come top side. I had to get the Gem Of Damu from Damien NOW. I could hear the hiss from my silver blade laced with the angels luminescence sizzle and eat away at his skin. “DAMN!!” he shouted as he removed the blade from his leg and tossed it down. The stench of sulfur filled the air. I quickly swiped up my weapon while he was still distracted. “How do you like the upgrade..it really packs a punch huh?” I scoffed. He glared at me as his skin struggled to regenerate. He would still be able to recover, just not as quickly as before. “You can either gracefully bow down and give me the Gem Of Damu, or I can take it from you. These people don't deserve what you are about to unleash on them!” I exclaimed. His pearly smile crept across his smooth ebony face. “These people came here because their lost souls needed to find a place to feel they belong. I'm going to ensure they become a family forever and come home to where they belong.'' The disgust in my eyes entertained him. I could tell he got a kick out of watching me worry. “The way you care to the point of self sacrificing has always been your biggest downfall. If you weren't so lost in saving others you'd see that this power isn't as horrific as you seem to think it is. You could become my queen and we could literally rule the world together. I could give you everything you have ever dreamed of and you could possess power beyond your wildest fantasies.” he convincingly spewed. “The thing I wish for is something that can never be undone. The only thing I want right now is for you to give me the gem and put an end to this wicked intent of yours.” I growled. “I see. Maybe one day you'll change your mind and wake up to the truth.” he said as he hurled himself towards me. I side stepped and dodged him. He was faster than I remember. But I too had gained more stamina. I didn't want to hurt any of the people around us. But a few casualties is better than hundreds. Lord forgive me. I jumped up and threw my legs around his neck and flipped him over onto his back with a hard slam. I bet he wasn't expecting that one. CRACK! His knuckles collided with my jaw. I fell back astonished at his audacity. I guess anyone can become a monster under pressure. I knew this fight wasn't going to be peaches and cream but he had never struck my face before. I was momentarily dazed but I made sure I got mines. WHOMP! I landed a vigorous kick to his stomach and he hit the ground. The surprise on his face was priceless. My power was increasing as the titillation of battle hit my system. I had become a fully matured huntress with high priestess rites. He wasn't dealing with the old me anymore. My body began to pick up on the Gem Of Damu. I could feel its power pulsing and creating waves of hysteria through the crowd. My curls began to lift with static from the energy. My olive skin began to have a faint silver glow around it. The moon was approaching its climax. “You know it's a shame I have to do this Nubia. You're so beautiful when the moonlight dances on your skin, even with blood trickling down your face.” he gave me a look of admiration mixed with savagery. He was trying to distract me from realizing he didn't have the Gem on him. I kept my guard up while I tried to measure where the gems power was coming from. The weight it carried was heavy and spread intensely throughout the crowd like a wild fire setting ablaze all the spirits of the people who feverishly danced to the tempo of impending doom. It was hard to pinpoint but I could feel its vibration calling to me. “It's a shame I didn't smoke you while I had the chance.” I begrudgingly said. My heart didn't mean it, but I knew that sacrifice was a part of the life I chose to lead and destruction was a part of his. Suddenly I was taken aback by a shockwave of extreme energy that hit me like an infuriated runaway bull. It was like electricity filling every cell in my entire being. I looked up and saw that Damien was feeling the intensity of the blood moon and gems mixed force too. Instead of the silver glow I was rocking he had developed a crimson aura that gave off a sinister feel. His demeanor became serious. He wasnt fucking around anymore. “Even if you locate the gem.. It's too late. The gates will open at any time now and you don't have an army to stop mine. My numbers will increase by the hundreds tonight and Lucifer will have the souls I promised him in exchange for the head chairmans seat. ” He was right. I thought I could handle this alone and stop him before the moon hit its peak. I was troubled by his statement. I knew he liked to aim high but it seems like his new found powers have also brought him higher ambitions. I didn't want to imagine the love of my life as the lead chairman in hell. I wanted him back by my side fighting the good fight and slaying demons with me. An impossible dream. I snapped myself out of sentimentality as I heard screams ripple across the crowd. “Oh no… it's happening…” I murmured nervously as I felt the ground quake beneath my feet. The stage began to lift and the ground beneath rose up as if tectonic plates had collided. I became unsteady and unsure as to what my next move should be. Do I save myself, or stay and try to locate the gem and find a way to close the gateway? Blood red and purple lightning crackled through the air as a swirl of dark energy emerged from the bottom of the uplifted stage. I watched in horror as fork tailed beasts with leather wings and burnt black skin emerged from the threshold of hell screaming like banshees. There were so many that you could hear their wings beat against the air of the night. I could feel the beasts hunger as panic took over the ocean of people. More lower level entities followed suit as they surfaced from the portal and immediately began their feast, ready to take the life force from those they felt would increase their power while scavenging for a strong host to take over. I felt an instantaneous jolt of pain strike my already shaky legs. I fell to the ground as Damien towered over me with a devilish grin. His eyes began to glow bright red as his dark aura surged with the force of the blood moon. My energy was at an all time high as well but I was caught off guard by the way everything was escalating. It was time to turn myself all the way up. “Bare witness to my wildest dreams. My accomplishment here tonight will go down in history as one of hells greatest victories!!” he manically howled at me. “If this is your dream, be prepared for me to turn into your worst nightmare. I refuse to give in to defeat. I'll fight to the very end even if you take my arms i'll just use my feet! I'll make sure you never get to touch that throne you so badly desire !!” I screamed, all emotional control went out the window. This was it. This was the moment I dreaded all these years. With both sais in hand, I lunged at Damien with all the strength I had in my body, tears streaming down my face as all the pain that had built up over the years rose to the surface to finally satisfy the thirst inside me for the scales of justice to come into balance. A flash of pride showed in his eyes for a moment before his look of viciousness returned. “Very well, as you wish my love.” He said as he catapulted himself full force in my direction. We struck each other like a stellar collision mixing light and dark forces of nature creating an overflow of power from every side of this dimensions spectrum. Two star crossed lovers turned fatal attraction. Only one of us was going to make it out of this alive.

Wretched
As I closed the door and turned around, I took in my surroundings. I appeared to be in some sort of manor house entrance hall. The place was lit up with Jack-o-lanterns and candles and an assortment of gothic decorations, such as black silk ribbons and velvet covers, adorned every surface. I noticed that my attire matched the surroundings well too, as I wore a black, silk set of pyjamas with a velvet trim and woollen slippers. Confusingly, these were not my clothes, nor was this my house. After getting my bearings, I took to exploring the manor. I went to try and open the doors along the narrow corridor to the left of the stairs, but to my frustration, they were all locked.

First in My Heart
Samantha looked out the kitchen window and shivered. She loved the view of the lake, but the way the water roiled when a storm was coming in made her marrow cold. She thought about pulling on a thicker sweater, but decided to stick with the soft green cashmere she’d chosen. Tim said it brought out her eyes. She smiled and turned away from the churning waves outside. Tim would be here soon and she needed to focus on getting ready.
