In the Woods
The deeper in the woods this thing ended up, the better this was going to be. Greg stood upright again and pulled his scarf up to cover his mouth and nose. It kept him warm, but it made it hard to catch his breath. There were no easy options, just icy air that ripped its way into his lungs or warm air that seemed stripped of oxygen.

Wait… Have I… Been Here Before?
Confidence comes naturally when you’re a Krav Maga black belt. That isn't to say I think I’m better than anyone else. That is to say I don't worry if I’m better than anyone else or not. On top of being on top of that class I’m the leading scientist in deja vu. You know, that feeling like you’ve done something that hasn't happened before. Some say it happens because you’re on the right path. Some like to think it means your path has changed and gone in a completely new direction. I’m a man of science. To me it’s almost absolutely a misfire in the synapses in your brain related to memory. I just… I just haven’t found the undeniable proof yet.

After Dark I Wake
As the sun starts to set I can finally feel the cool breeze as it whispers over my face. Nothing exists until then, I don't feel, I don't have any of my senses. I can not even breath. Now the sun is almost gone, I feel my pinky finger jump ever so slightly, I know that in a matter of minutes my life will begin once again. During the day I am nothing, so much so that if you were to stumble across my body you would find nothing even there, but at night when I come alive, the world shudders at my very existence. It hasn't always been this way, I was once a human, well human-ish, but that was a long time ago. Now I traverse the world after nightfall, and rest during the day. The sun fully sets now and my blood red eyes open, I take in the first breath of night air and immediately smell fear.

Bridgewater Bingo
Jerry’s room at the state hospital helped keep the darkness at bay. A white tile floor, four soothing pale green walls, a plain dark wooden door, and a bare white ceiling above him. The two small, high windows let in sunlight without the temptations of seeing the outside world. The simplicity of his white-painted bed, white sheets, and blankets, even his white painted bedside table, reassured him that his nightmares weren’t real.

The Owl of St Barnabas. Runner-Up in Return of the Night Owl Challenge. Top Story - January 2022.
We lived in the city when I was a child in the 1980s. It was and old industrial city that hadn’t changed much since the 1800s. There were new buildings here and there but that was in the centre, where I grew up much of the old mills and warehouses still stood alongside the old tenement buildings. We lived in one of them. It had been converted in the 1950s but it still looked tired. My parents had done a great job making it homely but to a young boy it’s lack of outdoor space was always a problem. There was no green space around us for me to play in and though on Sundays, when they were both off work, my parents would try their best to find me somewhere to play it was short lived. During the week there was nothing for me, especially during the school holidays. As I got older I began to wander and soon I found the only grass anywhere near me. The churchyard of St Barnabas’ became my quiet place, my countryside.

A Lively Old Merriment
This is a personal story that I must tell. Or to least, put into words for someone else to read one day. Plain and simple: It is a most startling account of my first experiences while field researching into my Indigenous-American blood lineage.

Rhonda
My sister Rhonda passed away at the young age of 27. She left behind her a 7 year old daughter and her husband. She was always quite healthy and competitive in sports when we were young and in school, but her life ran away with her as she was married at 19 and had her child at 20.
