Consecration (film)
“My brother always believed I had a guardian angel. I used to believe in nothing. Now I’m not so sure,” a voiceover tells us just as a nun pulls a gun and aims it directly at the camera. Thus begins Christopher Smith’s latest horror film, “Consecration.” If only the rest of the film were as invigorating as this opening sequence. Instead, the film proves to be just another retread of “spooky” Catholic-themed horror tropes without adding any insight or originality to the subgenre.

'Evil Dead Rise' Movie Review
From writer/director Lee Cronin and producers Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert, and Bruce Campbell, this new spin-off of the Evil Dead franchise leaves the familiar cabin-in-the-woods setting for a dilapidated apartment building in downtown Los Angeles. Beth (Lily Sullivan) works on the crew for a rock band, but when she finds out she’s pregnant, she turns to her sister Ellie (Alyssa Sutherland) for advice. But after Ellie’s son Danny (Morgan Davies) uncovers another volume of the Necronomicon Ex Mortis, the Deadites are unleashed once again, and Danny, Beth, Ellie, older daughter Bridget (Gabrielle Echols), and younger daughter Kassie (Nell Fisher) are directly in their path.

Since this is Swedish wrestler turned monster movie actor turned bestselling Halloween mask Tor Johnson's death day anniversary, I thought, since I've already tributed and homaged him in a previous review of the Golden Grail O' Gram of unholy Hollywood mishaps Plan Nine from Outer Space, that I'd take a few moments to talk about the second of the Woodian "Kelton Trilogy" (the last being the unreleased for decades Night of the Ghouls, starring Kenne "I'd Like to Chew on Your Tits" Duncan, and Valda "He Wants to Chew on My Tits" Hansen, whom, you might have guessed was the putative tit chewee in this whole hypothetical and highly controversial arrangement. (All that according to Rudolph Grey's excellent, excellent--did we mention that it was, in point of fact, excellent?--book Nightmare of Ecstacy: The Life and Art of Edward D. Wood Jr. (1990, Feral House), which I read as a wee tot of twenty, twenty-one maybe. A long time ago, when punk rock was still radical and could be acquired on audiocassette. Back then, you still went to the video store to purchase all of your memorable movie nightmares and ecstacies, whatever those might happen to be.
