The Last Bottle of Water
The last water storage tank still standing was heavily guarded by the local militia, according to rumors. Only members of their compound would have access to it. We knew it wouldn’t last long enough, but we didn’t know if they had any plans for when it started to run low. No one had ever made plans, even after people started warning that we would run out of water. Our obsession with instant gratifications, shareholder profits, and the selfishness of rugged individualism always got in the way of long-term planning. All we knew to do was fight and kill each other over what remained.

The Last Day
“Hey love, what’s the door code? For the Airbnb?” Sebastian didn’t respond. Collar turned against the rain, he grabbed his bags from the car. Her bags remained untouched. Not good, she thought. Water filled her tennis shoes as she slung the mess of straps around her. Maybe he’s tired... maybe it’s just later than he thought…

The Lake on Havelock Manor
Chapter 1: The forbidden lake: It had only felt like yesterday that we had moved up to Scotland, but it had been in fact a few weeks since we had left my beautiful home town in London. It all happened so quickly, just like that our house was on the market and sold within a week. Yes we had moved to a bigger place but I had to leave so much behind, our old house, my school, the friends that I loved like family. Everyday here was making my old life feel like a distant memory. I don’t know why we had to move, everything was perfect, mum just said it was for the best and of course being a 12 year old boy, I just had to go along with it. So I had to pack what little belongings I had acquired into boxes and kiss goodbye to everything I had ever known. It was weird seeing all of our belongings being loaded into the moving van, and I had a tear in my eye as the last boxes were piled up against the wall of the house that I will never forget. “I’ll get that one son” my mum called out, as I tried to lift the last suitcase up and into the van, it was heavy, really heavy. But knowing mum she was able to grasp it with ease and place it in the truck, she made it look effortless, she made everything look effortless.

Life Skills
Next time, they’ll put the tent up before they start drinking. This time, however, they made the mistake of unloading the cooler and mixing drinks before they did anything else. After all, the two couples had waited all year for this vacation and the drive to get here had taken twice as long as it should have since the GPS on the phones doesn’t work when there’s no reception. Tempers had worn thin by the time they finally arrived, and unwinding was first and foremost on their minds.
