The True History of Naswar

There is a widespread misconception among our Pashtun communities that naswar (chewing tobacco) is part of Pashtun culture or history. The new generation has also adopted this belief without question, simply assuming it to be true. Instead of investigating the origins, many wear this as a badge of honor, proudly claiming it as part of their cultural identity and even encouraging others to use it.

Unfortunately, very few people actually know the true history of naswar. In reality, naswar was not created by Pashtuns, nor does it have any authentic connection to Pashtun culture. It was actually invented in Portugal by a Spanish man, and from there it spread across Europe before eventually making its way into Asian countries.

Today, the use of naswar can be found in several countries including Pakistan, India, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, and various countries surrounding the Caspian Sea.

A Personal Anecdote from 1985

During a course in 1985, I remember an amusing incident during a test. A girl named Julia was sitting behind me, and she kept poking me with her pencil. I had no idea what she was trying to do. After finishing my paper, I stepped outside for a break, and Julia came out too, heading toward the smoking area.

She pulled out a pack of Cool cigarettes and offered me one. These are menthol cigarettes, mostly smoked by women as they cool the throat. I politely declined, pulled out my pipe, filled it with tobacco, and started smoking. Curious, I asked her why she was poking me during the test.

She replied, “You always score full marks! I was trying to tell you to move your paper so I could copy your answers!” I laughed and told her that cheating wasn’t right—she should prepare on her own. She apologized and said sorry.

Just then, an American classmate of mine came over, having finished his test as well. He reached into his pocket, pulled out a small packet, and took a pinch of its contents. He opened his mouth and tucked it between his lip and gum, looking completely at ease.

I looked at him and asked, “What is this?”
He replied, “This is chewing tobacco.”

I burst out laughing and said, “In our language, that’s called naswar!” 😂
He laughed too, and spent quite some time looking through a dictionary to compare the terms. 🤣

So yes, in English, chewing tobacco = naswar.

ہماری پھٹانوں میں ایک غلط فہمی پھیلی ہوئی ہے کہ یہ نسوار پھٹان کی ثقافت یا تاریخ ہے۔اور یہ نئی نسل بھی صرف یہ مانتی ہے کہ واقعی یہ ہے اور پوچھتے سوچتے نہیں کہ یہ سچ ہے یا جھوٹ۔ مگر اس پہ الٹا فخر کر کہ کہتا ہے کہ پھر تو یہ کلچر پورا کرنا ہے اور شروع کرتا ہے۔ لیکن بدقسمتی سے بہت کم لوگ نسوار کی اصل تاریخ جانتے ہیں۔ کہ یہ پہلے پھٹانوں نے بلکل نہیں بنائیں ہیں اور نہ ہی نسوار کی پختون کلچر سے کوئی تعلق ہے۔ بلکہ یہ "پرتگال" میں ایک ہسپانوی شخص نے بنایا تھا جو یورپ میں پھر عام ہوگئے اور بعد میں ایشیائی ممالک میں بھی متعارف ہو گئے۔ مختلف ممالک میں نسوار کی رسم پائی جاتی ہیں مثلا۔ پاکستان انڈیا تاجکستان ۔قازقستان ۔کرغزستان ۔ ازر بھائی جان ۔ ترکمانستان۔ افغانستان اور بحیرہ کیپسین کی مختلف ممالک میں پائی جاتی ہیں۔۔
1985 میں کورس کے دوران ایک دفعہ ٹیسٹ میں میرے پیچھے ایک لڑکی جولیا بیٹھ گئی ۔ وہ مجھے پیچھے سے پینسل سے ٹھوکریں مار رہی تھی۔ میری سمجھ میں کچھ نہیں آیا۔ میں پیپر ختم کر کے باہر بریک کے لئے نکلا تو وہ لڑکی بھی سموکنگ ایریا میں آئی ۔ اس نے Cool سگریٹ کا پیکٹ نکالا مجھے سگریٹ آفر کی۔ cool سگریٹ لڑکیاں پیتی ہیں اس میں مینتھل ہوتا ہے جو گلہ ٹھنڈا کرتا ہے۔ میں نے sorry بولا اور اپنا پائپ نکالا تمباکو بھرا اور پینے لگا۔ میں نے اس لڑکی جولیا سے پوچھا کہ مجھے پینسل سے ٹھوکر کیوں مار ریی تھی۔ تو اس نے۔کہا کہ آپ ہر دفعہ سو نمبر لیتے ہیں۔ میں آپکو کہہ رہی تھی کہ سائڈ پر ہو کر اپنا پیپر میرے سامنے کریں تاکہ میں نقل کر لوں۔ میں نے کہا کہ یہ اچھی بات نہیں آپ نے خود تیاری کرنی ہے۔ پھر اس نے sorry کہہ کر معذرت کر لی۔
اس دوران میرا ایک امریکی کلاس فیلو بھی ٹیسٹ ختم کر کے سموکنگ ایریا میں آیا۔
میرے امریکی دوست نے جیب سے ایک پیکٹ نکالا اور کھول کر ایک چٹکی بھری ۔ منہ کھول کر ہونٹوں اور دانتوں کے درمیان
ڈالی۔ اور مطمئن ہو گیا۔۔۔ امریکی گورا تھا۔ میں نے کہا . . What is this
کہنے لگا

میری ہنسی نکل گئی میں نے کہا اس کو نسوار بولتے ہیں۔😂انگریزی میںchewing tobacco = نسوار
امریکی لڑکا بھی ہنس پڑا اور کافی دیر ڈکشنری دیکھتا رہا🤣
