By lary michaelPublished about a year ago 4 min read

Halloween is one of those holidays that is observed annually, and this year it is on the 31st of October. This is a good time when people put on costumes, do pumpkin carving and go for a trick or treat for sweets. This day is not only about the costumes and candy but there is much more to it. Halloween has its origin dating back to thousands of years ago, it has its origin from traditions and beliefs. In this blog, I will discuss the history of Halloween, its origins, and why it is celebrated on the 31st of October.

Let’s start!

How Did Halloween Start?

Halloween had its roots in a very ancient world, with the Celts. They were inhabitants of what is now Ireland, Britain and northern France. The Celts also had a festival known as “Samhain”. This festival was celebrated during the last month of the year and it was associated with the harvest season, which was followed by the winter season, a period characterized by darkness and cold weather. To the Celts, this time was significant because the Celts thought that the veil between the two worlds was very thin. They believed that on the thirty-first of October, the spirits of the dead could return to the world of the living. To avoid these spirits, they burnt fires and put on clothes that would protect them from any spirits. Today, everyone celebrates this day and distributes foods in personalized macaron packaging boxes to further boost the joy.

Was Halloween Originally Evil?

Some might ask if Halloween was actually an evil celebration to begin with. The answer is no. It was not about making something evil or something bad for that matter. The Celts also thought that spirits returned to the earth during this time but this was not seen as a bad thing. They only wished to safeguard themselves through the burning of lights and costumes. Eventually, with the introduction of Christianity, people incorporated the Celtic customs into their new religion and this is how Halloween evolved.

What is the Story Behind Halloween?

The story behind Halloween starts with the ancient festival of Samhain, but it changes over the years. When Christianity became more widespread, it merged with the Celtic traditions. Christians began celebrating “All Hallows' Eve”, the night before “All Saints' Day”, on November 1st. This was a time to honor the saints and remember those who had passed away. The traditions of dressing up in costumes and remembering the dead carried over from Samhain to All Hallows' Eve, which eventually became known as Halloween.

The Origin of Halloween in Christianity

Christianity played a big role in shaping Halloween into what it is today. The church wanted to replace pagan festivals like Samhain with Christian holidays. That’s why they created “All Saints' Day” on November 1st to honor the saints and those who had died. Over time, the evening before became known as “All Hallows' Eve”, which was later shortened to Halloween. So, while the roots of Halloween come from pagan traditions, Christianity helped mold it into the celebration we know today.

Why is Halloween Celebrated on October 31st?

You may wonder why Halloween is always on October 31st. This date has always been important because it was Samhain's birthday. For the ancient Celts, this was the last day of the harvest and the start of winter. They believed that on this night, the spirits of the dead would return to earth. When Christianity came into play, it didn’t change the date. All Hallows' Eve stayed on October 31st, and we’ve kept celebrating it on this day ever since. Now, people gift each other different gifts packed in personalized gable boxes.

Halloween History Facts

There are some interesting facts about Halloween’s history. For example, the practice of carving pumpkins comes from an Irish tradition. Originally, they used to carve “turnips” but when the Irish people migrated to America they realized that carving pumpkins was more convenient. The tradition of going from house to house asking for treats is a combination of Celtic, Christian and even Roman roots. In some of the early Christian customs, people went from house to house begging for food in return for saying prayers for the dead.

From Where Did Halloween Originate?

Halloween has its origin from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain celebrated in Ireland and Scotland. It then moved to Europe and was shaped by the religion of Christianity as it evolved. Finally, when Europeans, particularly the Irish, moved to America, they took Halloween with them. The current Halloween celebrations that involve trick or treating, pumpkin carving and dressing to occasions in costume mainly evolved in the United States.

Why Is Halloween Still So Popular?

Halloween has turned into one of the most beloved holidays in the world, but especially in the United States. It’s a fun day for everyone. Kids enjoy wearing masks and going door to door to ask for sweets on Halloween. People like wearing costumes and home embellishment is also a favorite of adults. The reason it is still in vogue is that it is a creative holiday. You can do anything you wish, there are no specific ways of celebrating the day. It is a day on which people go out to engage in fun activities and this is why the day was created and has been existing up to now.

Concluding

In short, Halloween has a long way from its beginnings as a Celtic harvest festival and has evolved into a major event. Originally, it was a festival of Samhain and now it has become a fun and creative holiday for people all around the globe. Over time, people of different cultures and religions introduced their own customs to the celebrations. Today, Halloween is a fun day for all to put on costumes, carve jack-o-lanterns, and share sweets. While its origins can be traced back to pre-Christian Celtic paganism, today’s Halloween is a joyous occasion to spend time with loved ones.
