Love letter to Peter.

Waiting

Your letters keep me going.

Dear Peter,

My one and only true love, you Peter Charles Rutherford, I am writing to you this time for my heart aches. Writing to you gives me comfort in knowing this is the only contact we have while you are not next to me here. I painfully wait for your return, and can only imagine what you are going through in this dreadful war times. Please stay safe my darling, and don't try to be a hero, I know how good a heart you have. I long for your return so much.

My days and nights are spent praying for you my beloved Peter, and all the other people fighting for our country. Hoping this will be all over very soon. But, I must stay positive, and I should tell you about all the good beautiful things I see now. Hopefully my words can give you the strength to push on and stay positive also.

I am trying to keep upkeep on our country cottage, the garden is looking dashing. I water and tend to all the flowers we planted together in the front garden. I have even started to attempt to grow a variety of vegetables and fruit out the back. Upon your return home, we can have home grown food that I shall most graciously prepare for your meals. Now I must say, I am not born with a green thumb, but it keeps me busy. I just hope the weather compliments my efforts.

I walk to town for supplies, and Mrs Camilla Wheatly stops me for a chat as I pass her home. She always is so charming and delightful, and gives me cuttings from her lush garden. She is such a sweet old lady. I do hope I can do justice to all the cuttings I receive from her. Camilla inspires me to keep my chin up in these days of uncertainty. I do love my weekly encounters with her.

The local grocer always gives me a good deal, he says that he looks after Peter's girl. He is so funny, he tells me jokes and makes me laugh. Everyone here is waiting to welcome you back, you are so loved.

On the way home, Mrs Lily Holdsworth waved me over to say her husband and herself has to do trip away for a week or two. She didn't tell my why and was too shy to ask. But her request was if I could look after their beloved pooch Trixie while they were gone. Trixie is a delightful five year old golden retriever. I accepted because she is a beautiful happy dog, and would keep me company. So they brought over Trixie and her food, bowls and bedding to me, and farewelled us and continued their trip away.

I must say it is so wonderful to have Trixie here with me. The company is so pleasant, we play in the garden, and she loves it when I brush her coat. We snuggle up together on the couch while I read her a book. We really must get a dog of our own when you get back. They are such joyful friends. Secretly, I hope I can keep Trixie with me until you come home.

My heart still aches to hold you in my arms, the loving moments we had I treasure dearly. I replay those memories in my mind over and over. It seems like an eternity since you left, and an eternity until you return. In the short time that we spent after our hurried marriage, I am so happy now I am yours forever. We belong to each other, I am proud to be your loving wife, I am grateful we were allowed the time to have our tiny wedding before you were sent to be a soldier. I look at our wedding photo and feel excited to continue our life together blissfully loving each other.

I hope this letter isn't boring you, or too long, it's just that I want to tell you everything. And the mail takes so long to send and receive. I hope you can send me a letter as long as a novel. I anxiously anticipate a letter from you of any kind, to hear from you that you are safe.

I have been invited for a Devonshire tea with Mrs Marjorie Banks down the road tomorrow. It will be nice to have a chat with her about wordly events. Marjorie seems to be well informed in a variety of subjects. She always has lots of information, or is able to find out nearly anything you enquire about. Her tea and scones with jam and cream are divinely delicious, and her company exciting.

I have asked the two young sisters from next door to come over for the day to play with Trixie on Saturday. We will also attempt at baking some cakes and biscuits for afternoon tea. That should be fun for us all. Trixie is doing better than I thought she would, but I still see her listening to noises wondering when Mr and Mrs Holdsworth return to fetch Trixie. She is a truly loved dog. I do love having her here. Seems as though I have the children and a dog on loan here to practice, for when you get back we can practice making babies of our own. Also a dog or two to complete our family. I suggest you could start thinking of lots of names for them all, while you are there to keep you in good spirits.

I could keep writing, but the faster I send you this letter, the faster I will get back one from you. I truly hope you are looking after yourself as best as you can. I am trying to keep my spirits up, and so are all of our neighbours. We need to stay positive, so we can meet each other again whole from all this turmoil. Please let me know, if you can in advance, of your arrival back home to England.

But everything said, all I really want right now is you my love. I have given you my heart fully, and there is a big hole in my chest until you return. Then our hearts will be as one.

All my love, my Precious Peter, I truly, sincerely adore and love you.

Sending you all my love, your wife, Mrs Violet Audrey Rutherford.

Lots of hearts and kisses for you. XOXO
